Biden Embraces Trump’s Tariffs He Once Criticized

In a surprising policy reversal, President Joe Biden has announced substantial new tariffs on Chinese goods, a strategy mirroring the approach of former President Donald Trump—an approach Biden had previously criticized.

The newly announced tariffs will impact $18 billion worth of Chinese imports, including electric vehicles, steel, aluminum, semiconductors, and batteries.

– Tariffs on electric vehicles will increase from 25% to 100%.
– Steel and aluminum tariffs will rise to 25%.
– Semiconductors, crucial for modern technology, will see tariffs jump to 50%.

Rationale for Tariffs: President Biden justified the tariffs by stating, “China heavily subsidized all these products, pushing Chinese companies to produce far more than the rest of the world can absorb. And then dumping the excess products onto the market at unfairly low prices, driving other manufacturers around the world out of business.”

A Change of Tune: This move is notably reminiscent of the tariffs imposed by then-President Trump between 2018 and 2019. Trump targeted thousands of Chinese goods, asserting that Beijing was violating U.S. intellectual property laws. At the time, Biden was a vocal critic of Trump’s tariff strategy. In a 2019 tweet, Biden said, “Trump doesn’t get the basics. He thinks his tariffs are being paid by China. Any freshman econ student could tell you that the American people are paying his tariffs” .

By Biden’s own logic, it now raises the question: are American consumers bearing the brunt of his tariffs?

Discrepancies and Opinions: Contrary to Biden’s 2019 claims, his current trade representative, Katherine Tai, has indicated that assertions linking Trump’s tariffs to higher prices for Americans “have been largely debunked.” This contradiction highlights the evolving stance of the current administration on trade policies.

Voices from the Senate: Senator Marco Rubio commented on the new tariffs, stating, “Tariffs, while a tool of strategic importance, must be wielded with foresight, not hindsight. While these tariffs are a good step, President Biden’s delay has already done damage. American manufacturers have been crushed by unfair Chinese competition for too long.”

Opinion Note: Assertions about the motives behind Biden’s policy shift and the impact on American consumers are inherently opinion-based and should be considered as such.
