BIDEN REPLACES AMERICAN BORN WORKERS WITH FOREIGN BORN WORKERS
Since 2019, U.S.-born labor participation is down by 1.9 million workers. In that same period, 2 million foreign workers have been brought in to replace them.
The Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) released a new analysis that examines labor participation trends over the past two decades. It found that while the unemployment rate is at a 54-year low of 3.4%, we still have fewer Americans working today than before the Covid-19 pandemic. And Biden has filled those openings with foreign-born visa workers.
Let’s talk about the difference between the labor participation rate and the unemployment rate:
The labor participation rate is the proportion of the working-age population [16-65] that’s either employed or actively looking for a job.
The unemployment rate is the percentage of the labor force that is unemployed but actively looking for a job.
…all of this is to say that just because we’re at historically low unemployment, that’s primarily due to lower labor force participation. Since unemployment does not count working-age citizens who are no longer looking for work.
The study looked at trends in the U.S.-born and immigrant workers and found:
“There were 1.9 million fewer U.S.-born Americans working in the fourth quarter of 2022 than in the same quarter of 2019 before Covid. In contrast, the number of immigrants (legal and illegal) working was up two million over the same time period. The rapid growth in immigrant workers is well above the pre-pandemic trend line.”
The study also found that there are currently 59.5 million people [U.S.-born and immigrant] in the U.S. who are not working.
