BIDEN SENDS WEAPONS TO UKRAINE

Joe Biden announced that the U.S. will be providing an additional $800 million in direct military aid to Ukraine. Biden’s announcement came shortly after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed Congress and asked for help in their war with Russia.

These are the weapons we’ll be sending to Ukraine:

800 stinger missiles
2,000 javelin missiles
1,000 light anti-armor weapons
6,000 AT-4 anti-armor systems
100 armed drones
100 grenade launchers
5,000 rifles
1,000 pistols
400 machine guns
400 shotguns
20,000,000 rounds of small arms ammo
grenade launcher/mortar rounds

This package falls short of Zelensky’s request that the U.S. to either enforce a no-fly zone over Ukraine or provide them with fighter jets. [I don’t believe we should provide either] But Biden did signal a willingness to move NATO’s S-300 anti-aircraft systems to Ukraine.

The S-300 was developed to defend against aircraft and cruise missiles

The bigger picture: Officials from Russia and Ukraine expressed optimism yesterday that peace talks were making progress.

Zelensky said negotiations were heading in a “more realistic” direction

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said there is “hope for reaching a compromise”
