California Assembly blocks bipartisan bill to Put child traffickers in Jail for Life
A California Assembly committee blocked a bipartisan bill that would have increased penalties set for human traffickers of children, following a trend of legislative moves that prioritize criminals and sexual predators over children’s safety.
The bill, titled SB 14, was cleared in the California Senate with bipartisan support, but when it arrived at the state Assembly, the Committee on Public Safety blocked it from consideration.
None of the six Democrats on the committee voted to pass the bill. Both Republicans voted for it.
One person could be heard screaming “Horrible!” and another shouted “You should be ashamed of yourselves!” as victims of child trafficking in attendance cried.
What the bill would have done: It would have classified the human trafficking of children as a ‘serious felony’ In California, the ‘serious felony’ designation is currently reserved for murder, rape, and other crimes where the penalty may include life in prison or the death penalty.
It would have prohibited plea bargaining and ensured that district attorneys [California has some of the most radical] prosecute these crimes to the letter of the law.
On the side of human traffickers: Following the decision, California GOP chairwoman Jessica Millan Patterson said: “You know you’re on the wrong side of an issue when you deliver a win for human traffickers. Democrats on the Public Safety Committee proved they have no intention of protecting the lives of Californians, let alone protecting innocent children from the horrors of human trafficking.”
What happens next: The bill was given “reconsideration” which means it can be considered again next year.
