Connecticut Judge William Clark has overturned the results of Bridgeport’s Democratic mayoral primary following the emergence of a video depicting a supporter of incumbent Mayor Joe Ganim allegedly stuffing ballots into an absentee ballot drop box.
The videos, described by Clark as “shocking to the court and should be shocking to all the parties,” played a pivotal role in the decision to nullify the primary results.
Breaking News: Connecticut Judge Overturns Bridgeport Mayoral Primary After Democrat Clerk Caught in Ballot Stuffing Scandal
Connecticut Judge William Clark has overturned the results of Bridgeport’s Democratic mayoral primary after a video surfaced showing a supporter of current Mayor Joe Ganim allegedly stuffing ballots into an absentee ballot drop box.
The videos, Clark stated, “are shocking to the court and should be shocking to all the parties.”
“Clark ordered the parties to confer with each other, and with election officials, within 10 days to discuss scheduling a new primary,” Connecticut Public reported.
This development comes just days before the November 7 election day. Clark’s decision to overturn the results was based on the serious allegations of ballot stuffing, casting doubt on the legitimacy of the primary results where Ganim secured victory by 251 votes out of 8,173 cast.
The decisive factor for Clark was the mishandling of absentee ballots in Ganim’s favor, leading him to state, “The volume of ballots so mishandled is such that it calls the result of the primary election into serious doubt and leaves the court unable to determine the legitimate result of the primary.”
The surveillance footage, obtained by Ganim’s opposition candidate John Gomes, prompted a lawsuit against the city, calling for the results to be annulled and a new primary scheduled, or to be declared the winner himself.
A new primary date has not been announced, and if Ganim loses the upcoming general election, a new primary may not be set at all. Gomes, endorsed by a minority party, remains on the ballot.
Gomes’ attorney, Bill Bloss, emphasized the significance of the videos in court, stating, “The videos don’t lie. The videos showed substantial, massive absentee ballot misconduct. And that was certainly a substantial reason why the judge ruled the way he did, I think.”
Gomes expressed his satisfaction with Clark’s decision, stating, “Today, Lady Justice fulfilled her duty,” and emphasizing the victory as a collective one for the people of Bridgeport.
