With North Carolina’s general election only four days away, federal prosecutors have announced another round of criminal voting cases across the state.

On Thursday, October 29, the U.S. Department of Justice reported 18 additional people charged with unlawfully voting in the 2024 election, bringing its announced statewide total for 2026 to 30.

The new cases span all three federal judicial districts, including five in the Middle District, which serves much of the Piedmont Triad.

The announcement is significant, but it requires precision.

Charges are not convictions.

Prosecutors allege that the defendants were not U.S. citizens when they voted. The defendants retain the presumption of innocence, and the filing of these cases does not establish that unlawful voting is widespread or that any election outcome changed.

North Carolina has a responsibility to enforce eligibility laws.

It has an equally important responsibility to protect eligible voters from mistaken accusations or improper removal.

Eighteen New Cases Across Three Federal Districts

The Justice Department’s October 29 announcement breaks the new cases down by federal jurisdiction: nine in the Eastern District, five in the Middle District, and four in the Western District.

In the Eastern District, prosecutors say a grand jury indicted nine people who allegedly falsely claimed U.S. citizenship to register and vote in 2024.

In the Middle District, four people were indicted and a fifth was charged by criminal information.

In the Western District, three people were indicted and one was charged by information.

That distinction matters.

A criminal information is a formal charge filed by a prosecutor rather than a grand-jury indictment. Both are accusations, not findings of guilt.

The Justice Department says 17 of the 18 newly charged individuals were lawful permanent residents, while one was in the country without lawful permanent status.

Lawful permanent residence does not itself confer eligibility to vote in federal elections.

The department says the 18 new cases follow 12 earlier North Carolina cases announced this year, for a reported total of 30 people charged.

Those figures describe federal enforcement actions announced in 2026, not 30 convictions or 30 votes proven to have altered an election.

The Triad’s Five Cases Put the Issue Close to Home

The Middle District cases include defendants whom prosecutors identify as living in Reidsville, Winston-Salem, Seagrove, Salisbury, and Concord.

That places the new allegations within communities connected to the Triad and central North Carolina.

Federal prosecutors say four of those defendants face counts alleging both a false claim of U.S. citizenship and voting by a noncitizen.

A fifth is charged by information with voting by a noncitizen.

U.S. Attorney Dan Bishop, who oversees the Middle District, said his office intends to enforce election laws protecting lawful voting.

His statement expresses the prosecution’s position. It is not a judicial determination that the defendants committed the alleged offenses.

For residents of Guilford, Alamance, Rockingham, Randolph, Forsyth, and nearby counties, the local significance is straightforward.

Eligibility checks and federal criminal investigations are not merely national campaign arguments.

They can involve local registration records and ballots.

But the October 29 release does not establish a new charge involving an Alamance or Guilford County resident.

Nor does it identify any specific 2026 ballot that was improperly counted.

The announced cases concern alleged voting in 2024, with some charging documents describing earlier elections as well.

How the State Checks Citizenship, and Where Mistakes Can Happen

North Carolina’s State Board of Elections has expanded its use of the federal Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements database, known as SAVE, to review voter-registration records.

On October 13, the board said it would contact 1,392 registrants identified as potential noncitizens, approximately 0.02% of the state’s roughly 7.9 million registered voters.

The agency explicitly warned that a database match does not prove someone is ineligible.

Records may be incomplete or outdated, particularly when someone has become a naturalized citizen.

The state says it checks other records and provides notice and an opportunity to correct information before any removal proceeding.

Receiving one of those letters does not automatically cancel a registration or bar an otherwise eligible voter from participating.

In April, the State Board said its earlier audit of the 2016 election found 41 ineligible noncitizens with legal status who had voted out of nearly 4.8 million ballots.

It also said it had no evidence that noncitizen voting was a widespread problem.

Those historical findings do not decide the new prosecutions.

They do, however, demonstrate why the public needs both effective investigation and a sense of proportion.

Suspected records, criminal charges, proven unlawful votes, and final election outcomes are four different things.

Election Security Must Include Due Process

Federal law prohibits noncitizens from voting in federal elections.

Prosecutors say falsely claiming U.S. citizenship to vote can carry a maximum five-year prison term and fine, while unlawful voting by a noncitizen can carry up to one year.

Maximum penalties are not predictions of any defendant’s sentence.

The new cases arrive during an active election.

Early in-person voting ends Saturday, October 31, at 3 p.m.

Election Day is Tuesday, November 3, with polls open from 6:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m.

Election administrators must verify eligibility, investigate credible evidence, and protect the integrity of voter lists.

They must also respect procedural protections for people who are eligible to vote.

A naturalized American is a citizen, and an erroneous government database entry must not be treated as a conviction or automatic disqualification.

The Southern Coalition for Social Justice has criticized the timing of the announcements and warned against exaggerating the scale of the problem.

Prosecutors argue that even a small number of unlawful ballots deserves enforcement, especially in close contests.

Both positions can be evaluated without assuming the new defendants are guilty or claiming that the 2024 election was decided by these cases.

Enforce the Law Without Sacrificing Liberty

The Go Right with Peter Boykin Perspective

I support citizenship requirements for voting.

If someone knowingly lies about being a U.S. citizen and casts a ballot illegally, the government should investigate and, when the evidence supports it, prosecute.

Every lawful vote matters, and voters deserve confidence that the rules are being followed.

But I also believe in due process.

An indictment is an accusation. It is not a verdict.

A person who has legally become a U.S. citizen should not have to fight an outdated database record just to exercise a constitutional right.

I do not want either party using these cases to make claims the evidence cannot support.

Thirty people charged statewide is a real enforcement development.

It is not proof of millions of illegal votes, and it is not a reason to treat every immigrant or naturalized citizen with suspicion.

North Carolina should publish clear information about how cases were identified, how registration errors are corrected, and what safeguards protect eligible voters.

The standard should remain the same regardless of which political party benefits.

Secure elections and individual liberty are not opposing goals. Government must uphold both.

The Ballot Box Needs Rules and Restraint

The October 29 announcement gives North Carolina a concrete development to examine: 18 newly charged defendants, cases in three federal districts, and a reported 2026 statewide total of 30.

It does not settle the defendants’ guilt, establish widespread noncitizen voting, or change the voting rules for November 3.

The public should expect credible investigations, fair trials, transparent election administration, and safeguards against erroneous voter-list removals.

A constitutional republic depends on protecting lawful ballots and the rights of the people who cast them.

What To Watch

Watch for court appearances, pleas, trial schedules, and eventual rulings in the new federal cases.

Any conviction or acquittal should be reported separately from the original charges.

Watch for State Board updates on citizenship-record reviews, including how many of the 1,392 people contacted establish eligibility and whether any removals follow lawful notice and review.

Eligible North Carolinians can still vote early through 3 p.m. Saturday, October 31, or at their assigned polling place on Tuesday, November 3.

Voters should rely on official State Board guidance for identification, registration, and polling-location questions.
