ETHICS WATCHDOG SAYS AOC LIKELY VIOLATED HOUSE RULES
An independent House ethics panel says Rep. AOC may have violated “standards of conduct” and federal law when she accepted a free dress and free tickets to attend the 2021 Met Gala.
In September 2021, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wore a dress with the words “Tax the Rich” embroidered onto it (note Joy Vila a Trump Supporter wore similar dresses with Right Wing messages so AOC isn’t even original), which was gifted to her for free. The Congresswoman also accepted free tickets, valued over $30,000. Both gifts violate House ethics rules.
The details: The Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE) released a statement on the potential violation:
“Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez may have accepted impermissible gifts associated with her attendance at the Met Gala in 2021. If Rep. Ocasio-Cortez accepted impermissible gifts, then she may have violated House rules, standards of conduct, and federal law.”
What AOC says: Her attorney released a statement saying: “While regrettable, this matter definitively does not rise to the level of a violation of House Rules or of federal law.”
Why this matters: Politicians are corrupt by nature [in my opinion]. But there are some guardrails in place to prevent their corruption.
House ethics rules prohibit members of Congress from accepting gifts of “gratuity, favor, discount, entertainment, hospitality, loan, forbearance, or other item having monetary value.”
Federal law says no member can “solicit or accept anything of value from a person seeking official action from, doing business with” or “whose interests may be substantially affected by the performance or nonperformance of the individual’s official duties.”
The point is… We don’t want politicians accepting gifts because it can corrupt their decision-making.
