Eventbrite Sparks Controversy: Cancels Pro-Women Event, Permits Pro-Hamas Gathering
Eventbrite, the event management and ticketing platform, has generated controversy by canceling a “Protecting Women’s Sports” event featuring Riley Gaines, citing a violation of its hateful-conduct policy. Meanwhile, the platform has allowed pro-Hamas events, leading to accusations of double standards.
Eventbrite provides users with the ability to create, browse, and promote events.
The Details: Riley Gaines, a former college swimmer turned women’s rights activist, had her event at the University of California Davis canceled, with Eventbrite claiming a breach of community guidelines related to discrimination or inciting violence.
Double Standard: Notably, Eventbrite has permitted pro-Palestine events on its platform, even when they echo propaganda from the Hamas terrorist group.
For instance:
An event scheduled for November 1, titled “Stop the Genocide! Free Palestine!” distorts the events of October 7 in Israel, where Hamas allegedly committed heinous acts against over 1,000 Israeli civilians.
The event describes the actions as: “Early on Saturday, October 7th, Palestinian resistance fighters broke through Israel’s siege of Gaza.” …a questionable characterization.
Real Talk: While advocating for free speech and the right for both events to take place, the discrepancy between allowing a women’s rights event cancellation and permitting a potentially biased pro-Hamas event raises questions about Eventbrite’s consistency.
Update: Reports have surfaced that Eventbrite deleted the pro-Hamas rally listings without explanation. However, the initial response by the company remains relevant in reflecting its character.
