FAKE MEAT GOES RANCID
Plant-based meat alternatives Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods were once hailed as the future of the meat industry and looked at by environmentalists as a way to slowly wean humanity off of real meat.
…then reality hit.
But first, what is in plant-based meat? It’s made by extracting proteins from plants such as soy, pea, or wheat. Then they smash them together with a bunch of unhealthy oils, added flavors, and binders like methylcellulose (a synthetic chemical compound) to mimic the taste and texture of real meat.
While the texture wasn’t terrible, for many it has a really offputting aftertaste.
Fake meat goes rancid: Fast forward to 2023, and the two big plant-based meat producers, Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods, are circling the drain…
Beyond Meat’s sales dropped nearly 25%, according to their last quarterly earnings report. And the company recently had to lay off 20% of its workforce in order to cut costs.
Impossible Foods is also laying off about 20% of its workforce due to dwindling sales.
Overall sales of fake meat in supermarkets and restaurants both show dwindling interest:
Supermarket sales of fake meat: -15% in 2022
Restaurant sales of fake meat: -9% in 2022
