Two men have been arrested by the FBI after spending the last two years posing as members of a Department of Homeland Security taskforce, infiltrating federal agents as well as one of First Lady Jill Biden’s own Secret Service (USSS) agents.
Arian Taherzadeh and Haider Ali was arrested last month by the FBI and charged with impersonating federal law enforcement and obtaining handguns, rifles, and other materials to pose as Department of Homeland Security officers.
Here’s how it went down: Taherzadeh and Ali moved into a DC apartment building in the Navy Yard where lots of USSS agents lived, drove around in an official-looking SUV equipped with flashing lights, held official-looking DHS ID cards, and carried Glocks.
They ingratiated themselves with the agents by providing lavish gifts, like:
rent-free luxury apartments (worth up to $40k/year)
high-end electronics and policing equipment
a $2,000 assault rifle
and other policing tools
…and all the while, they claimed to be working on a task force investigating the January 6 riots and gang violence.
Four USSS agents have been placed on administrative leave, including the agent who works on Jill Biden’s security detail.
What we don’t know: The FBI has not shared the pair’s nationality or their motive. They also haven’t shared whether these two made contact with Jill Biden.
What I would assume: The FBI isn’t saying it, but this was probably an operation run by a foreign government in order to infiltrate U.S. federal agents – given how costly and elaborate the scheme was.
