KEVIN MCCARTHY UNDERCUTS JOE BIDEN AND HIS STATE OF THE UNION
McCarthy 2.0 continues to, for the most part, do and say all the right things…
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy held a press conference, pre-empting Joe Biden’s State of the Union speech, and ripped Joe Biden and the Democrats for wanting to raise the debt ceiling and continue adding to our $31 trillion national debt.
The debt ceiling is a legislative limit on the amount of national debt the federal government can accumulate.
The current debt ceiling sits at $31.4 trillion.
Treasury Sec. Janet Yellen says we will hit that ceiling in late spring.
Here’s what McCarthy said: The central message in his speech was to drive home that our massive debt will be the legacy we leave to our children and grandchildren. He explained the link between our debt and the current inflation crisis. And he proposed a deal to raise the debt ceiling to address previous commitments, in exchange for cuts to federal spending to eventually eliminate our debt.
Here are some excerpts:
💬 “A responsible debt limit increase that begins to eliminate wasteful Washington spending and puts us on a path to a balanced budget is not only the right place to start, it’s the only place to start.”
💬 “If you had teenagers, and they spent past the limit on a credit card – yes you pay for it – but you don’t allow their bad spending habits to continue. You change their behavior so it never happens again… I think I speak for most Americans when I say ‘It’s time for Washington to change its behavior and act like adults.”
💬 “We can leave our children a future with higher inflation, higher interest rates, and crushing debt. Or we can leave them free to pursue happiness as God intended.”
💬 “Cuts to medicare and social security, they’re off the table. Defaulting on our debt is not an option.” Debunking a lie that Democrats repeatedly tell.
💬 “Don’t take my word for it. Here’s what then-Vice President Joe Biden said when he negotiated a debt limit increase with House republicans in 2011. ‘You can’t govern without negotiating.’ Those are his words… And House Republicans are following it now.”
What the other side is saying: Biden spokesman Andre Bates claims: “House Republicans are threatening to actively throw our economy into a tailspin with a default.”
Why this is important: The debt ceiling is the most effective legislative tool available to us [with control of just the House] to reign in the reckless spending that puts every American at risk. This is a fight worth having.
Side note: I do love that McCarthy undercut Biden the day before his big speech.
