Elon Musk tweeted his intentions to vote Republican in the next election:
“In the past, I voted Democrat, because they were (mostly) the kindness party. But they have become the party of division & hate, so I can no longer support them and will vote Republican. Now, watch their dirty tricks campaign against me unfold … 🍿”
24 hours later a story from Business Insider alleged that in 2018, Space X [the aerospace firm founded by Musk] paid a flight attendant $250,000 to settle a sexual misconduct claim against Musk from 2016.
According to the report, Musk was accused of exposing himself to the attendant, rubbing her without consent, and offering to buy her a horse in exchange for an erotic massage.
The documents obtained by Business Insider came from a friend of the accuser, who said “I absolutely felt a responsibility to come forward with it, especially now. He is the richest man in the world.”
The report insinuates the friend came forward without the blessing of the accuser.
Musk responded to a request for comment from Business Insider:
He emailed to ask for more time to respond and said there is “a lot more to this story.”
He added: “If I were inclined to engage in sexual harassment, this is unlikely to be the first time in my entire 30-year career that it comes to light.”
…But it appears this article was run before Musk issued the full response he requested.
Musk later tweeted: “The attacks against me should be viewed through a political lens – this is their standard (despicable) playbook – but nothing will deter me from fighting for a good future and your right to free speech”
Ben Shapiro defended Muks on Twitter: “That amount of money for a settlement of this sort is absolutely de minimise [minor or trivial], and everyone who understands corporate law knows this.”
Harmeet K. Dhillon, a lawyer who specializes in civil rights replied to Shapiro’s tweet, saying: “Can confirm. This is a defense costs level settlement ie cost avoidance, not merits, in Silicon Valley.
Sexual harassment is an allegation that should be taken very seriously. But the timing of this seems too convenient.
We’ll see how it unfolds…
