Employees at Randolph Health in Asheboro reported delayed paychecks Friday, October 23, adding to months of concerns involving the hospital’s finances, medical supplies, employee benefits, and management.

The situation is significant because Randolph Health is the only hospital serving Randolph County, a community of approximately 150,000 residents.

The hospital employs roughly 800 people.

Its privately owned parent company insists payroll was processed, but employees interviewed by The Assembly described payments that had not reached their accounts at the expected time.

The dispute raises questions about the financial stability of an institution that thousands of North Carolinians depend upon for medical care.

Paychecks Fail to Arrive on Schedule

On Thursday, October 22, Randolph Health CEO Kevin Spiegel notified employees that their scheduled Friday paychecks could arrive later than usual.

According to a memo reviewed by The Assembly, Spiegel attributed the anticipated delay to the hospital changing bank accounts.

On Friday, employees reported growing frustration as the usual payroll deposits failed to arrive.

Several workers told The Assembly that supervisors had indicated payments were expected by early afternoon.

Some employees reportedly left work after the payments did not appear.

Shortly before 3 p.m., the hospital’s human resources department informed employees that payroll funding had been sent to banking institutions before 2 p.m.

However, after 5 p.m., five employees told the publication they still had not received their money.

Two employees subsequently reported receiving deposits around 6 p.m.

American Healthcare Systems owner Mike Sarian maintained that every employee had been paid through direct deposit.

The available reporting therefore establishes that employees experienced delayed access to payroll funds, while the owner disputed suggestions that workers had not been paid.

It does not establish that every employee ultimately went unpaid or that payroll remained unresolved the following day.

Months of Financial Problems Raise Broader Concerns

Friday’s incident was not the first financial issue reported at Randolph Health.

An earlier Assembly investigation described complaints from employees about delayed maintenance, medical supply shortages, and financial instability.

The hospital’s parent company also experienced problems involving an employee health insurance arrangement.

According to documents examined by the publication, UnitedHealthcare terminated its contract with the parent company after a payment default in July.

Employees subsequently reported difficulties using their replacement coverage.

There were also delayed transfers of employee retirement contributions during the summer.

The hospital later caught up on those retirement payments.

Company executives have disputed some employee descriptions of the hospital’s operations and have stated that earlier problems were corrected.

Chief Medical Officer David Rosen acknowledged that some supply-related complaints had reflected genuine problems.

The company has maintained that its financial position and hospital operations are improving.

Those competing accounts make independent financial documentation particularly important.

Public Money Creates an Accountability Question

Although Randolph Health is privately operated, the hospital’s financial history also involves public resources.

American Healthcare Systems purchased the hospital in 2021 after a bankruptcy process.

The Assembly has reported a dispute involving a $12 million state-supported loan connected to the hospital’s acquisition and operations.

County officials say the company has failed to meet important terms of its financial obligations.

The dispute includes requirements for providing quarterly financial information.

According to the reporting, local officials have questioned whether the necessary financial statements were supplied.

Hospital CEO Spiegel has maintained that audited financial information was shared with the hospital board.

But local government representatives serving on that board disputed receiving financial statements that satisfied those expectations.

This creates a fundamental accountability question.

When public financial assistance helps preserve a privately operated hospital, what documentation should taxpayers receive showing that the hospital remains capable of meeting its obligations?

The public has a legitimate interest in understanding the use of public resources and the conditions attached to financial assistance.

Private ownership does not eliminate those obligations.

The Community Cannot Easily Replace Its Hospital

Randolph Health provides essential medical services to Asheboro and surrounding communities.

The next emergency department is more than 30 minutes away for some residents, according to The Assembly’s reporting.

That makes financial instability at the hospital more than an employment dispute.

Employees need dependable compensation and benefits.

Patients need access to properly staffed facilities, reliable equipment, and necessary supplies.

Local officials need accurate information when public resources are involved.

And residents need confidence that critical medical services will remain available.

None of this establishes that the hospital is about to close.

No closure announcement or formal finding of imminent closure was established by the reporting.

However, the concerns are substantial enough to warrant clear communication from hospital management and appropriate scrutiny from responsible oversight agencies.

The best outcome would be demonstrated financial stability, reliable employee compensation, and uninterrupted patient care.

Private Management Still Requires Public Accountability

The Go Right with Peter Boykin Perspective

I support private enterprise and believe private organizations can play an important role in delivering health care.

Government ownership is not automatically the answer to every problem.

But private management carries responsibilities.

When employees work their scheduled shifts, they deserve to receive their compensation as promised.

When a hospital accepts public financial assistance, taxpayers deserve to understand the terms and whether those conditions are being met.

And when a community depends on one hospital, financial problems cannot simply be dismissed as an ordinary business disagreement.

The hospital’s owner says employees were paid and previous operational problems have been corrected.

Employees describe experiences that raise legitimate questions.

The answer should come from verifiable records, accurate financial statements, and an appropriate review of any unresolved complaints.

I don’t believe North Carolina should respond to every private-sector problem by demanding more government control.

But I also don’t believe government should ignore contractual obligations or legitimate public-safety concerns.

Protecting individual liberty includes respecting workers’ contractual rights, patients’ safety, and taxpayers’ financial interests.

What To Watch

The immediate question is whether every Randolph Health employee received the October 23 payroll deposit and whether future paydays proceed normally.

Watch for clarification from management regarding the bank-account transition and payroll processing.

Watch whether county officials receive the financial statements required under applicable agreements and whether outstanding financial disputes are resolved.

State and federal regulators may also need to examine specific complaints involving patient safety or employee benefits if those complaints remain unresolved.

The hospital’s management should provide timely, verifiable updates rather than leaving employees and residents to rely on conflicting accounts.

A Community Needs More Than Reassurances

Randolph County needs a dependable hospital.

Its employees need reliable paychecks, and its patients need confidence that essential medical services are available.

The hospital’s management has an opportunity to address the concerns through documented financial performance, transparent communication, and compliance with its obligations.

The goal should be a functioning hospital that serves its community without unnecessary uncertainty.

Accountability is not an attack on private enterprise.

It is part of protecting the people who depend upon it.
