This story isn’t getting much coverage in the U.S. media. CNN’s homepage is nothing but war porn. And Fox News isn’t much better. I had to find this information in U.K. media:
Russia and Ukraine are reportedly expressing optimism about a new 15-point peace deal that the two sides are negotiating to end the war – even as war rages on inside Ukraine.
According to five people briefed on the talks who spoke to the Financial Times of London, these are some of the elements of the deal being discussed:
A cease-fire and Russian withdrawal
Ukraine declares neutrality
Ukraine accepts limits on its armed forces
Ukraine agrees not to join NATO
Ukraine agrees not to allow foreign military bases inside its borders in exchange for protection from allies like the US and UK
Ukraine recognizes Donetsk and Luhansk as independent states
Ukraine recognizes Crimea, taken in 2014, as Russian territory
The last two points in red are the major roadblocks to this agreement, as Ukraine has signaled a willingness to accept the other terms.
What they’re saying:
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said the negotiations have a “business-like spirit” and “gives hope that we can agree on this issue.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia’s demands were becoming “more realistic.”
Vladimir Putin said, “We are ready for talks.”
Buying time? There’s always the possibility that peace talks are a ruse by the Russians to buy themselves time to regroup their forces, which have faced a more fierce defense by Ukraine than they anticipated.
