Are Democrats Rewriting History While Claiming to Protect Democracy?

The morning coffee had barely cooled when the headlines started rolling in again. Another political fight. Another argument over what Americans are supposed to believe about their own history. The debate was not just about what happened in the past. It was about who gets to define it.

Welcome back to Go Right News

In a Constitutional Republic, history is not simply a collection of events. It is the story people tell afterward. Whoever controls that story often controls how future generations interpret the past. That struggle over narrative power is now unfolding across America, and the stakes reach far beyond one political party or one election cycle.

The question Americans should be asking is simple.

Are we witnessing a fight over truth, or a fight over who gets to write it?

Did the Media Get It Backwards About Trump While Ignoring Chaos on the Left?

A strange thing happened in American politics over the last decade.

For years, the public was warned about an approaching disaster. Commentators on television panels leaned forward with grave voices. Politicians issued speeches about democracy hanging by a thread. Social media is filled with predictions that one man would burn the entire system down.

Donald Trump, Americans were told, would be the end of the country.

The warnings were relentless. Trump would destroy institutions. Trump would ignite violence. Trump would dismantle democracy itself.

But step back for a moment and look at the strange contradiction unfolding in real time.

Across the country in recent years, cities have seen riots, vandalized buildings, burning cars, smashed storefronts, and mobs flooding into streets. Protest movements have turned into destruction. Government buildings have been stormed. Police officers have been attacked. Public monuments have been pulled down.

And yet many of the same voices that predicted chaos from Trump have often struggled to condemn the chaos happening in front of them.

The irony has become impossible to ignore.

The Prediction That Never Matched Reality

From the moment Trump entered national politics, media narratives painted him as uniquely dangerous.

Headlines warned of authoritarianism. Commentators said the republic itself was at stake. Political opponents framed him not simply as a rival candidate but as a threat to the entire constitutional system.

That narrative became so dominant that many Americans assumed disaster would inevitably follow if Trump held power.

But the years that followed produced a far more complicated picture.

The country did not collapse. Markets rose. International negotiations shifted. Foreign policy confrontations cooled in some regions and intensified in others. Immigration policies changed. Trade agreements were renegotiated.

Like every presidency, there were controversies, policy battles, and fierce disagreements.

But the apocalyptic predictions that dominated media coverage did not materialize in the way many expected.

The Violence That Often Went Unnoticed

While much of the national conversation focused on the dangers allegedly posed by Trump supporters, several violent episodes linked to far-left activist groups received far less sustained attention.

Antifa linked riots erupted in multiple cities during various protests. Businesses were looted and burned. Federal buildings were attacked in Portland. Police precincts were set on fire. Statues were toppled. Entire downtown districts were temporarily overwhelmed by unrest.

Even government buildings and state capitols were targeted during certain protests.

These events rarely produced the same level of national narrative framing as the January 6 Capitol riot.

To many observers, this created the perception of a double standard.

One violent event tied to the political right became a defining symbol used repeatedly to describe an entire movement. Meanwhile, repeated episodes of violence connected to far-left protest groups were frequently described as isolated incidents or dismissed as the work of fringe actors.

That difference in framing is where the debate about history begins.

When Governments Start Writing the Official Story

The fight over narrative power took a new turn with legislation passed in Virginia.

The Virginia General Assembly approved a bill prohibiting schools from teaching what lawmakers call falsehoods about the January 6 Capitol riot.

The legislation specifically states that school instruction must not portray the events of January 6 as a peaceful protest or suggest that widespread election fraud could have changed the results of the 2020 presidential election.

Instead, the law requires that the event be described as an unprecedented violent attack on United States democratic institutions.

The bill was sponsored by Democratic Delegate Dan Helmer of Northern Virginia.

“The White House has tried to rewrite history,” Helmer told CBS News. “I don’t want to celebrate traitors in our public schools.”

Supporters of the legislation say it ensures factual education and prevents misinformation.

Critics argue the law raises a different concern. When politicians begin dictating how historical events must be described in classrooms, the line between education and political narrative becomes dangerously thin.

If politicians decide which interpretations of history are allowed to be taught, then historical debate itself becomes political territory.

And once that door opens, it rarely closes.

The Dangerous Power of Narrative Control

Every nation wrestles with the same question.

Who decides what future generations learn about the past?

History is never just a list of events. It is an interpretation. It is context. It is a debate. It evolves as new evidence emerges and perspectives shift.

When governments begin codifying how certain events must be described, critics fear the line between education and propaganda becomes dangerously thin.

The same principle applies regardless of which political party holds power.

If Democrats can define the official story about January 6 today, Republicans could theoretically do the same about other controversial events tomorrow.

The Constitution was designed around skepticism of concentrated power for precisely this reason.

No single faction should control the narrative of an entire nation.

Why This Matters for North Carolina

This debate should not be viewed as a distant issue happening only in Virginia.

North Carolina is experiencing its own political shifts as population growth, migration, and changing demographics reshape the state’s political landscape.

That makes the decisions voters make about leadership more important than ever.

If the wrong leaders are sent to Raleigh, policies that attempt to control historical narratives or restrict debate could easily appear in North Carolina as well.

Preventing that outcome requires gathering the right candidates. Candidates who can represent all citizens, not just one faction of a political movement. Candidates who respect constitutional principles, defend free speech, and ensure that education encourages critical thinking rather than political conformity.

In a Constitutional Republic, the government should never become the official author of history.

Is America Watching a Narrative War Disguised as History?

Go Right with Peter Boykin, the Constitutionalist For Liberty Monologue

Step back and look at the broader picture of what is unfolding across the country.

For years, Americans were warned that Donald Trump represented an existential threat to American institutions. Media outlets repeated that claim so frequently that it became accepted political language. Politicians declared that democracy itself was hanging by a thread.

But now another reality is emerging.

Across the country, we are watching governments, media institutions, and political movements increasingly attempt to define what citizens are allowed to believe about political events.

The debate is no longer simply about what happened on January 6.

The debate is about whether the government should have the authority to decide how history must be interpreted.

That should concern every American regardless of party.

The Founders of the United States understood that truth emerges through open debate, not political decree. That is why the First Amendment exists. That is why the Constitution protects speech, dissent, and the free exchange of ideas.

A Constitutional Republic depends on citizens being able to challenge narratives, question authority, and examine events from multiple perspectives.

When the government begins setting guardrails on historical interpretation, the conversation stops being about education.

It becomes about control.

The danger is not simply that one political party may shape the narrative today. The danger is that the precedent allows any party in power tomorrow to shape the narrative for their own advantage.

History becomes less about facts and more about which faction holds power at the moment.

North Carolina should take this moment seriously.

The future direction of the state will depend heavily on the leaders voters choose to send to Raleigh. The state needs candidates who understand the responsibility of protecting constitutional principles rather than expanding political authority.

North Carolina needs leaders who will defend free speech, encourage open debate, and resist the temptation to allow government institutions to become the official authors of history.

That means gathering candidates capable of representing all citizens properly and winning elections without abandoning the constitutional values that protect liberty.

Because once politicians begin deciding which interpretations of history are acceptable, the next step is deciding which viewpoints are unacceptable.

And that is a line that a Constitutional Republic should never cross.
