Are Sensible Gay Americans Being Politically Orphaned By Both Sides During Pride Month?
There is a certain kind of exhaustion that sets in when you have spent years trying to build a bridge, only to watch both sides show up with gasoline.
That is what this Pride Month has felt like.
For many gay Americans, especially those who do not fit neatly into the left-wing activist box or the right-wing religious stereotype, this has become one of the hardest Pride seasons to watch. The hate is louder. The insults are uglier. The assumptions are faster. The left still tries to own the rainbow as if every gay person must bow to progressive politics, while too many on the right treat the rainbow as if it is some kind of warning label for moral collapse.
Caught in the middle are regular gay Americans who simply want to live, work, worship, love, marry, raise families, serve their country, vote their conscience, and be treated as citizens under the Constitution.
That should not be radical.
Yet somehow, it has become a battlefield.
Pride Has Become A Political Cash Machine
At its best, Pride is supposed to be about remembrance, visibility, survival, equal rights, and constitutional dignity. It is supposed to remind the country that gay Americans were once treated as criminals, mentally ill, unemployable, disposable, and unworthy of the same basic legal protections as everyone else.
At its worst, Pride has been hijacked by two political machines that profit from keeping people angry.
The left uses the LGBT community as a fundraising machine, a voting bloc, a corporate branding tool, and a permanent crisis narrative. They demand loyalty, punish dissent, and act as if any gay person who refuses to vote Democrat is a traitor to their own existence.
The right, meanwhile, too often uses the LGBT community as a cultural punching bag. Some claim they are fine with gay people, but then they spend every June parroting the same lines about demons, sin, grooming, degeneracy, and national collapse. They say they only oppose the extreme activists, but somehow the anger always seems to land on the rest of us too.
That is the trap.
Both sides need a villain. Both sides need a donor email. Both sides need a viral clip. Both sides need outrage because outrage makes money.
And regular gay Americans are tired of being used as the product.
One Extreme Does Not Represent The Rest Of Us
There are extreme people on both sides of the political spectrum. There are activists who cross lines. There are public displays that are not appropriate for children. There are bad examples that deserve to be criticized. There are conversations about schools, sports, medical ethics, public decency, and parental rights that should be taken seriously.
But one extreme example does not define every gay person.
One activist does not speak for every lesbian. One drag performer does not speak for every gay man. One viral Pride video does not erase the lives of gay veterans, gay Christians, gay conservatives, gay parents, gay first responders, gay taxpayers, gay business owners, and gay citizens who simply want the same rights and responsibilities as everyone else.
The media knows exactly what it is doing when it finds the worst possible example and turns it into the face of an entire group. The outrage accounts know exactly what they are doing when they clip the most offensive moment they can find and tell people, “This is what all of them are.”
It is dishonest.
It is destructive.
And it is working.
The Youth Are Watching This Hate In Real Time
This is where the conversation becomes more than politics.
Young people who may fit somewhere under the rainbow are watching adults argue about whether they are broken, sinful, dangerous, confused, mentally ill, or less worthy of dignity. They are watching people use religion as a weapon. They are watching families split over politics. They are watching politicians turn their existence into campaign material. They are watching churches, schools, influencers, and media outlets talk about them like they are a national problem instead of human beings.
Then we act shocked when so many of them are struggling.
The Trevor Project’s most recent national survey found that 36 percent of LGBTQ young people seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year, and 1 in 10 attempted suicide. It also found that 44 percent of LGBTQ young people who wanted mental health care were not able to get it, and more than 8 in 10 said they had noticed harmful rhetoric around LGBTQ people.
That should stop every adult in their tracks.
This does not mean every policy debate is hate. It does not mean parents should be silenced. It does not mean people of faith lose their First Amendment rights. It does not mean every disagreement is violence.
But words do matter. Culture does matter. Rejection does matter. Mockery does matter. Being told over and over that you are a threat, a demon, a disease, or a political problem does real damage, especially to young people already trying to survive confusion, fear, family pressure, bullying, isolation, and identity struggles.
A Constitutional Republic should be capable of protecting children without dehumanizing gay Americans.
Cutting Support While Increasing Rhetoric Is A Dangerous Combination
At the same time the rhetoric is getting worse, support systems are being weakened.
The LGBTQ-specific option connected to the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline was ended, with federal officials arguing that the broader 988 system would serve all callers. Supporters of the specialized option argued that LGBTQ youth facing crisis often need counselors trained to understand family rejection, bullying, identity-related distress, homelessness risk, and fear of being misunderstood.
This matters because crisis support is not abstract. For some young person sitting alone at night wondering whether life is worth continuing, the difference between being understood and being dismissed can be life or death.
Beyond hotlines, LGBT-related community support often overlaps with homeless shelters, counseling, youth programs, HIV support, addiction recovery, family support, and local nonprofit services. When these programs are defunded, politicized, or treated like ideological luxuries, real people pay the price.
You cannot scream that the community is in crisis and then cut the very programs that help keep people alive.
You cannot say you care about children and then mock the vulnerable ones who are most at risk.
You cannot claim moral superiority while turning suffering into a campaign slogan.
Religion Should Not Be Used As A Weapon Against Citizenship
Many Americans are people of faith. Faith matters. Religious liberty matters. The First Amendment matters. Nobody should be forced by the government to abandon their beliefs, violate their conscience, or pretend theology does not exist.
But religious liberty is not a license to strip other citizens of equal protection.
There is a difference between saying, “My faith teaches this is wrong,” and saying, “Because of my faith, you should have fewer civil rights under the law.”
That difference matters in a Constitutional Republic.
Gay Americans are not asking the government to rewrite anyone’s Bible. We are asking the government not to treat us as second-class citizens. We are asking that marriage rights, employment rights, hospital visitation, housing, public safety, and equal protection not be subject to whichever religious faction has the loudest microphone in a given election cycle.
People can preach their beliefs. People can live their faith. People can disagree with Pride. People can raise their children according to their values.
But the Constitution protects citizens, not just the citizens someone’s church approves of.
Why So Many Gay People Go Left
This is the part too many conservatives refuse to face.
I can understand why so many gay people go left.
Not because the left has earned their loyalty. Not because the Democrat machine actually values them as individuals. Not because corporate rainbow branding or progressive identity politics is the answer.
They go left because the right too often makes it clear they are not wanted.
When a young gay person hears the right talk about them as sinful, dangerous, corrupt, demonic, mentally ill, or part of some national decay, what exactly do conservatives expect them to do? When every Pride Month becomes a flood of insults, memes, threats, and moral panic, why are people surprised when gay Americans run toward the side that at least pretends to welcome them?
For more than ten years, I have tried to pull people to Go Right. I have tried to show gay Americans that they do not have to live on the Democrat plantation. I have tried to remind people that constitutional liberty, free speech, limited government, religious freedom, gun rights, parental rights, border security, fair elections, and economic opportunity belong to all Americans.
But how do you tell gay people to leave the left when parts of the right keep proving the left’s accusations correct?
How do you tell gay conservatives to stay and fight when some people on your own side treat them like tolerated guests instead of equal citizens?
How do you build a movement when the door keeps getting slammed in the face of the very people you are trying to bring home?
The Left Does Not Own Us and The Right Should Not Reject Us
Sensible gay Americans are not politically homeless because we lack values.
We are politically homeless because both sides keep demanding that we surrender part of ourselves.
The left says, “Be gay, but only if you vote how we tell you, speak how we tell you, and support every activist demand without question.”
The right says, “Be conservative, but do not be too openly gay, do not talk about Pride, do not ask for recognition, and do not complain when people call you sinful or worse.”
No.
That is not freedom.
Gay Americans should not have to choose between rainbow collectivism and religious hostility. We should not have to choose between the left’s identity politics and the right’s moral panic. We should not have to choose between being used by Democrats and being rejected by Republicans.
There has to be a better path.
That path is constitutional equality.
That path is public decency without public hatred.
That path is parental rights without erasing gay citizens.
That path is religious liberty without civil inequality.
That path is Pride with purpose, not Pride as a political weapon.
Where Are Sensible Gay Americans Supposed to Go?
The Go Right with Peter Boykin Perspective
Here is the question nobody wants to answer.
Where are sensible gay Americans supposed to go?
Where do we go if we believe marriage equality should be protected, but we also believe children should not be exposed to sexualized adult content?
Where do we go if we support Pride as remembrance and visibility, but reject corporate pandering and extremist activism?
Where do we go if we believe in God, but reject people using God as a weapon to demean us?
Where do we go if we believe in parental rights, but also know what it feels like to be the kid who is terrified to tell the truth at home?
Where do we go if we believe in the Constitution, the First Amendment, the Second Amendment, secure borders, local control, law and order, fiscal sanity, and equal protection under the law?
For years, I have said we must Go Right. I still believe that. But going right cannot mean walking into a room where people cheer for liberty while carving out exceptions for gay Americans.
A real conservative movement should not fear gay citizens who believe in the Constitution. It should welcome them. A real liberty movement should not demand that gay people disappear. It should defend their right to exist, speak, marry, worship, work, vote, protect themselves, and live freely.
The left does not own the rainbow.
The right does not own God.
And neither side gets to own my dignity.
Pride Month should not be a season of political warfare. It should be a reminder that human beings are not campaign props. Gay Americans are not fundraising tools. Trans and queer people are not punching bags. Children are not shields for adult politics. Faith is not a weapon. The Constitution is not optional.
We can protect children and protect gay rights.
We can defend religious liberty and defend equal protection.
We can reject extremism without rejecting people.
We can Go Right without going backward.
That is the fight. That is the bridge. That is the mission.
And whether the left likes it or the right likes it, sensible gay Americans are still here.
We are not going back into the closet.
We are not going back to the Democrat plantation.
We are not surrendering our Constitution.
And we are not letting hate from either side define who we are.
