Are We Walking into Another War or Finally Facing the One That Never Ended?

The Attack You Didn’t See Coming

It didn’t interrupt your day.

No emergency broadcast.
No breaking sirens.
No declaration from Congress.

But somewhere, an American base took fire.
Somewhere else, a drone struck U.S. personnel.
Somewhere in the shadows, another plot against Americans was unfolding.

And most people never even heard about it.

Because it didn’t fit the narrative.

But here’s the truth buried under decades of spin:

This didn’t just start.
This has been happening for over 40 years.

So the real question isn’t whether we’re heading into war with Iran.

It’s whether we’ve been in one all along and nobody had the courage to say it out loud.

The Timeline They Don’t Want You Thinking About

If you want the honest version, there is no credible way to fit literally every hostile act into one reply. But I can give you a solid, documented timeline of the major ways Iran’s revolutionary regime has harmed America, Americans, and U.S. interests since the revolution that began in 1978 and brought the Islamic Republic to power in 1979. ([Office of the Historian][1])

1) 1979 to 1981: Iran seized the U.S. Embassy and held Americans hostage.

On November 4, 1979, militants seized the U.S. Embassy in Tehran and held 52 Americans hostage for 444 days. This was the foundational anti-American act of the new regime and shattered relations with the United States. The State Department’s history says the hostages included diplomats and embassy staff, and the crisis became the defining opening chapter of the regime’s hostility toward America. ([Office of the Historian][1])

Iranian revolutionaries storm the U.S. Embassy in Tehran
52 Americans held hostage for 444 days
Diplomatic relations shattered overnight

👉 This wasn’t just a protest
👉 It was the first direct act of aggression by the new regime

This wasn’t confusion.

👉 This was the opening act of a regime built in opposition to the United States.

2) 1980s: Iran helped build and arm Hezbollah, which attacked Americans.

The U.S. government has long described Iran as a principal backer of Hezbollah and has repeatedly identified Iran as a state sponsor of terrorism. In the 1980s, Hezbollah and allied militants carried out attacks that killed Americans in Lebanon, including the broader wave of anti-U.S. terrorism that drove the U.S. withdrawal from Lebanon. The State Department still says Iran remains the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism. ([U.S. Department of State][2])

Iran funds and builds Hezbollah
American targets attacked across Lebanon
U.S. influence pushed out of the region

👉 Iran learned early:
You don’t need a conventional war when you can use proxies

3) 1983: Iranian-linked terrorism hit U.S. targets in Beirut and Kuwait.

The U.S. government has tied Hezbollah, backed by Iran, to major anti-American terrorism in this period. The Reagan-era State Department history notes that terrorist attacks in Lebanon were central to the collapse of the U.S. mission there. State also commemorated the 1983 bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Kuwait City, part of the same Iran-backed terror ecosystem targeting American personnel and facilities. ([Office of the Historian][3])

Iran learned early:

👉 You don’t need a traditional war when you can make others fight it for you.

4) 1990s: Iran-backed operatives were charged in the Khobar Towers bombing.

In 1996, the Khobar Towers bombing in Saudi Arabia killed 19 U.S. Airmen and wounded 372 Americans. The Justice Department and FBI said charges were brought against members of pro-Iran Saudi Hizballah, and the FBI said the attack would “serve Iran” by driving Americans from the Gulf. ([Department of Justice][4])

19 U.S. Airmen killed
Hundreds wounded
Iranian-backed militants linked to the attack

No declaration.
No battlefield.

👉 Just dead Americans and plausible deniability.

5) 2003 to 2011: Iran-backed militias killed Americans in Iraq.

This is one of the most deadly chapters. The Pentagon has said that Qods Force-backed militias used Iranian-provided IEDs, EFPs, anti-tank weapons, rockets, and drones and are estimated to have killed more than 600 U.S. personnel in Iraq between 2003 and 2011. Army and Defense officials also said Iranian-made EFP components were being smuggled into Iraq and used to kill Americans. ([U.S. Department of War][5])

Iranian Quds Force arms militias in Iraq
Advanced IEDs and explosively formed penetrators used
Over 600 U.S. troops killed by Iranian-backed forces

👉 This is critical to understand:

Americans were dying at the hands of Iranian-supported fighters while we were already at war elsewhere

6) 2011: U.S. prosecutors said Iran directed a terror plot in Washington.

The Justice Department charged two men in a plot “directed by elements of the Iranian government” to murder the Saudi ambassador inside the United States with explosives. One defendant later pleaded guilty, and DOJ said he had conspired with Iranian military officials. Even though the target was Saudi, the plot itself was an act of foreign-state terrorism planned on American soil. ([Department of Justice][6])

Iranian-linked operatives charged with plotting to assassinate a diplomat in Washington, D.C.

👉 Not overseas
👉 Inside the United States

7) Iran has spent decades funding terror groups that kill Americans and attack U.S. interests.

The State Department’s terrorism reports repeatedly say Iran supports Hezbollah and other terrorist groups, and in its 2023 report it again called Iran the leading state sponsor of terrorism. This matters because Iran often works through proxies rather than open conventional war, which is how it has been able to target Americans while keeping some distance from the attack itself. ([U.S. Department of State][7])

8) Iran has repeatedly threatened or targeted U.S. troops and facilities through proxies in Iraq and Syria.

The U.S. government has repeatedly blamed Iran-backed militias for attacks on American troops and bases. The Pentagon said an Iranian-backed group launched a ballistic missile attack on Al Asad Air Base in Iraq in November 2023, injuring U.S. and coalition personnel. Defense officials also said Iranian-backed militias in Syria were responsible for a March 2023 drone attack that killed a U.S. contractor and wounded U.S. troops and another contractor. ([U.S. Department of War][8])

9) 2023 to 2024: Iran-backed groups sharply escalated attacks on U.S. forces.

A senior State Department official said DoD counted 206 attacks on U.S. forces in Iraq, Syria, and Jordan between October 18, 2023 and late 2024 by Iranian-backed proxies. In January 2024, a drone attack on Tower 22 in Jordan killed three U.S. service members and injured more than 40 others. ([U.S. Department of State][9])

10) Iran has targeted the United States in cyberspace.

The FBI said seven Iranians working on behalf of the Iranian government were indicted for cyber attacks that cost U.S. financial institutions tens of millions of dollars. U.S. agencies also said Iranian cyber actors targeted election-related systems and created a site threatening U.S. election officials. In 2024, the FBI announced indictments of three IRGC cyber actors for a “hack-and-leak” operation designed to influence the U.S. presidential election. ([Federal Bureau of Investigation][10])

Attacks on U.S. banks and infrastructure
Election interference operations
Psychological and digital warfare

👉 Modern battlefield
👉 Same long-term strategy

11) Iran has interfered in U.S. elections and tried to deepen American divisions.

The FBI, ODNI, and CISA publicly stated that Iran engaged in election influence operations, including in 2020 and 2024. Official U.S. assessments said Iran sought to undermine confidence in American democratic processes and inflame domestic divisions. ([Federal Bureau of Investigation][11])

Repeated attacks on U.S. troops in Iraq and Syria
Drone strikes killing American personnel
200+ attacks on U.S. forces in recent years
Continued assassination plots targeting U.S. officials

👉 This is not theoretical
👉 This is ongoing

12) Iran has also been linked to assassination and murder-for-hire plots targeting U.S. officials.

This is not just old history. In November 2024, DOJ said it charged an asset of the Iranian regime tasked with furthering assassination plots, including against President-elect Donald Trump. In March 2026, DOJ announced the conviction of an Iranian intelligence-linked operative in a foiled plot to assassinate U.S. politicians and government officials on American soil. ([Department of Justice][12])

Bottom line:

Since the Islamic Republic came to power, Iran’s regime has harmed America through hostage-taking, terrorism, proxy warfare, killing U.S. troops, cyber attacks, election interference, and assassination plots. The pattern is not random. It is decades-long, systemic, and repeatedly acknowledged by U.S. agencies across administrations of both parties. ([U.S. Department of State][2])

What Changed? Nothing. That’s the Warning.

Iran’s strategy hasn’t needed to change:

Push without triggering full war
Attack through proxies
Deny direct responsibility
Test American limits repeatedly

And for decades, the response has been inconsistent.

Measured.
Delayed.
Sometimes absent.

So now we’re not facing a new situation.

👉 We’re facing the consequences of a long one.

America First Doesn’t Mean America Blind

This is where many Americans are divided.

You hear:

“No more foreign wars”
“Stay out of the Middle East”
“Focus on America first”

Those instincts are understandable.

But here is the reality that has to be explained clearly:

👉 This is not about starting a new war
👉 This is about responding to a conflict that has already been happening for decades

An America First approach does not mean ignoring threats.

It means:

Protecting American lives first
Defending U.S. troops first
Responding when Americans are attacked
Avoiding endless nation-building and occupation

There is a difference between:

✔ Defending Americans
✖ Trying to rebuild foreign nations

Let’s Address the Narrative Directly

“This Is About Israel”

No.

That argument skips the core facts:

Americans were taken hostage
Americans were killed in terror attacks
Americans were killed in Iraq
Americans are being targeted today

👉 This is direct hostility toward the United States.

You can debate alliances.

But you cannot ignore reality.

“We Don’t Want Another War”

Neither does anyone serious about this issue.

But understand this:

👉 Ignoring repeated attacks does not prevent war.

It invites more of them.

Strength deters.

Weakness escalates.

“This Came Out of Nowhere”

No.

It came out of decades.

👉 The difference now is visibility.

The Real Question America Has to Answer

How many attacks equal a war?

How many American lives lost before we call it what it is?

How long do we keep pretending this is just “tension”?

Because the longer we avoid that answer…

👉 The easier it becomes for adversaries to keep pushing.

If This Isn’t War, Then What Do You Call 40 Years of Attacks on Americans?

The Go Right with Peter Boykin Perspective

Let me say something that’s going to make some people uncomfortable… but it needs to be said anyway.

Somewhere along the line, the American people were trained to believe that war only counts if it looks like the history books.

Uniforms.
Front lines.
Declarations from Congress.
Victory speeches at the end.

Clean. Clear. Easy to understand.

But that’s not how our enemies fight anymore.

And that right there… is where the disconnect begins.

Because while Americans were told we were at peace…
American soldiers were being targeted.

While politicians argued over words and optics…
American bases were under attack.

While the media chased headlines and distractions…
a shadow conflict kept moving in the background.

Quiet.
Consistent.
Deadly.

And here’s the truth a lot of people don’t want to face:

👉 You can be in a war… even when your government refuses to call it one.

For over four decades, the Iranian regime has understood something very clearly about the United States.

America does not respond the same way to indirect attacks.

So what did they do?

They adapted.

They built proxies.
They funded militias.
They armed insurgents.
They used terror networks, cyber warfare, and deniable operations.

Not because they couldn’t fight directly…

👉 But because this works.

It bleeds America…
without triggering the full force of American retaliation.

It keeps everything just below that line…
where politicians are forced to act decisively.

And for decades…

That strategy has worked.

Now stop and think about what that really means.

It means Americans haven’t just died in one war.

They’ve died in a series of connected attacks…
that were never honestly framed as one.

No single moment to rally around.
No clear line drawn.
No accountability moment.

Just a slow bleed.

And that’s why people are confused.

Because when they hear “conflict with Iran,” what do they think?

Another Iraq.
Another Afghanistan.
Another endless war.

But that’s not what this is.

This isn’t about nation building.
This isn’t about occupation.
This isn’t about sending massive armies overseas.

👉 This is about recognizing reality.

Americans have already been under sustained attack.

And once you understand that… everything changes.

Because now the question isn’t:

“Should we go to war?”

The real question is:

👉 What do you do when you’ve already been in one… whether you admitted it or not?

And that’s where the America First conversation needs to grow up.

Because America First does not mean selective awareness.

It does not mean we only pay attention when things are dramatic enough to trend.

It does not mean we ignore decades of attacks… just because they didn’t happen all at once.

America First means protecting Americans.

Full stop.

And protection requires clarity.

It requires honesty.

Even when it’s uncomfortable.

Now let’s deal with the argument I keep hearing…

That this is about someone else.

That we’re being pulled into this for another country.

That this isn’t really our fight.

That only works… if you ignore reality.

Because Americans were taken hostage.
Americans were killed in terror attacks.
Americans were targeted in Iraq.
Americans are being targeted right now.

👉 That is not indirect.
👉 That is not borrowed.

That is direct hostility toward the United States of America.

You don’t have to agree on every foreign policy move to understand that.

And you don’t have to support endless wars to recognize this simple truth:

👉 Repeated attacks demand a response.

Because here’s the danger if we get this wrong.

If a foreign adversary can target Americans over and over again…

If they can kill U.S. service members through proxies…

If they can strike bases, plan assassinations, and operate inside our borders…

And the response is hesitation… confusion… or silence…

👉 Then the message is crystal clear.

America absorbs it.
America debates itself.
America hesitates.

And the world is watching that.

History has never been kind to nations that refuse to draw lines.

Not because those nations wanted war…

👉 But because avoiding reality invited more aggression.

So, let’s be very clear.

This is not a call for endless war.
This is not a call for occupation.
This is not a call for reckless escalation.

👉 This is a call for honesty.

Honesty about what has already happened.
Honesty about what is still happening.
Honesty about the responsibility of a government to defend its people.

Because pretending this is something smaller…

Doesn’t keep us safe.

It keeps us unprepared.
It keeps us divided.
And it keeps us reacting instead of leading.

So now we’re left with the real question.

Not whether we want war.

👉 But whether we have the clarity to recognize one when it’s already been happening for decades.

Because if we don’t…

We’re not avoiding conflict.

👉 We’re choosing to live inside it… without ever defining it.
