The Supreme Court ruled that a football coach had the constitutional right to pray on the 50-yard-line after a school district barred him from doing so.

Back up: The case centers around Joe Kennedy, a public school football coach in Washington state who is a Christian and would kneel at the 50-yard-line after every game and pray. Coaches and students [including opposing teams] started joining him, but Kennedy never asked or required anyone to take part. His school district eventually suspended him after they asked him to stop and he refused.

The details: The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that the school district cannot stop him from publicly exercising his faith. Justice Neil Gorsuch wrote the majority opinion and said:

“Our precedents remind us that the First Amendment’s protections extend to ‘teachers and students,’ neither of whom ‘shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate.”

Gorsuch cited a landmark 1969 case that upheld students’ rights to wear a black armband to protest the Vietnam War.

The dissent: Justice Kagan, representing the 3 dissenting Justices, wrote that the ruling was “misguided because it elevates the religious rights of a school official, who voluntarily accepted public employment and the limits that public employment entails.”

Mr. Kennedy said: “This is just so awesome. All I’ve ever wanted was to be back on the field with my guys. I thank God for answering our prayers and sustaining my family through this long battle.”
