Arizona Will Not Prevent Trump from Running in 2024
Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes has made a significant decision regarding the eligibility of former President Donald Trump for the 2024 ballot, which has implications for both sides of the political spectrum.
Background: Section 3 of the Fourteenth Amendment has a provision that disqualifies citizens from holding office if they were involved in “insurrection or rebellion” against the U.S. This legal clause has been at the center of the ongoing debate, with some referring to the events of January 6th as an “insurrection.”
Recent Developments: Fontes had previously left room for the possibility of using this amendment to prevent Trump from appearing on the 2024 ballot. However, he recently clarified that Arizona state law prohibits him from doing so, stating, “The Arizona Supreme Court has ruled that there’s no statutory process in federal law to enforce Section 3 of the 14th amendment, and therefore, it cannot be enforced.” It’s worth noting that Fontes expressed his frustration with what he referred to as a “stupid” Arizona law.
Public Opinion: A recent August poll showed that Trump holds a slight lead over President Biden in Arizona, with 45% supporting Trump and 43% supporting Biden in a hypothetical 2024 match-up.
