Berger vs Page. Inside the GOP Knife Fight. Is the Republican Civil War Finally Here?
North Carolina’s Republican Crossroads. The Berger vs Page Primary, The Investigations, The Letter on the Doorstep, The Quiet Ads, And The Party Strain No One Wants To Admit
A quiet road in Rockingham County can tell the truth better than any poll. Drive that road long enough, and you will hear the real conversations that shape North Carolina. People talk about crime. They talk about taxes. They talk about their schools, their neighborhoods, and how everything around them feels like it is shifting faster than the people in Raleigh understand. Yet when these same voters turn on the television, they are greeted with a storm that feels nothing like the conversations they have at home. The Republican primary between Senate Leader Phil Berger and Sheriff Sam Page has grown into a statewide spectacle, a collision between the voices of Raleigh and the voices of Rockingham. It has become one of the most bitter internal battles the North Carolina GOP has seen in years.
This is not only a primary. This is a referendum on what direction the Republican Party will choose within a Constitutional Republic.
Phil Berger. The Legislative Powerhouse and Architect of the Modern North Carolina Senate
Phil Berger built one of the most influential careers in North Carolina politics.
His record includes
• Multiple terms as State Senator
• Many years as President Pro Tempore of the Senate
• Chief strategist behind the state budget
• Leader in statewide tax reform
• Architect of the largest school choice expansions in state history
• A driving force behind regulatory rollback laws
• Lead voice in judicial and election reforms
• Central figure in maintaining a Republican veto-proof majority
Berger’s political philosophy rests on institutional control. He believes that lasting conservative policy comes from mastering the rules, mastering the process, and moving strategically. His supporters see him as a stabilizing force. Someone who has kept North Carolina from collapsing into the kind of chaos seen in other states that drifted left too quickly. They trust his experience, his discipline, and his ability to negotiate behind closed doors where major state decisions are made.
In Berger’s world, patience is strength. Order is strategy. The long game is how conservatives win.
Sam Page. The Sheriff With Grassroots Energy and National Reach
Sheriff Sam Page built his influence outside legislative chambers. His authority comes from the front line.
His record includes
• Longtime Sheriff of Rockingham County
• National spokesperson for border and law enforcement coalitions
• Participant in congressional hearings on fentanyl and national security
• Advocate for mental health, addiction treatment, and community safety
• Representative for North Carolina sheriffs at the regional and national levels
• Partner with federal agencies on trafficking and drug interdiction
Page’s platform centers on
• Strong border enforcement
• Fentanyl interdiction
• Local policing partnerships
• School and community safety
• Government transparency
• Tough sentencing for violent crime
• Protection of constitutional rights for citizens
He speaks unscripted. He shows up where problems happen. He earned trust by standing beside families in crisis, deputies in danger, and communities in fear. His supporters believe Raleigh has drifted away from the realities that law enforcement sees every day.
In Page’s world, leadership is presence. Results are immediate. Government must listen before it dictates.
Where Berger and Page Align
Both men share core conservative commitments.
• Lower taxes
• Traditional values
• Strong election integrity laws
• Constitutional rights protected without compromise
• Local authority over state mandates
• A pro-law enforcement culture
• Resistance to progressive ideology pushed by national groups
• Limited federal intrusion into state power
This is not a contest of ideology. This is a contest of governing philosophy.
Where Berger and Page Differ
The differences come from how they see power.
Berger
• Strategic
• Process driven
• Long-term focused
• Legislative mastery
• Believes stability protects conservatism
Page
• Immediate
• People-focused
• Community rooted
• Enforcement-minded
• Believes responsiveness protects conservatism
Both represent real and valid branches of the Republican coalition. That is why the primary became emotional long before it became political.
The SBI Investigation. A Cloud With Real Weight
According to the News & Observer, the State Bureau of Investigation confirmed an active investigation involving Sheriff Sam Page. The probe began after the State Board of Elections referred issues involving missing or incomplete public records and campaign documents. Officials will not release details while the case is open, but the mere confirmation added fuel to speculation across the state.
Page says the timing is political. His campaign insists all filings were submitted and that he is cooperating fully. Critics say the investigation raises questions. Supporters believe investigations often appear when a challenger threatens established power.
Either way, the existence of the investigation is now part of the public record and part of the political battlefield.

State Sen. Amy Galey was spotted on a Ring camera outside the home of Rockingham County Sheriff Sam Page.
The Amy Galey Doorstep Letter. A Moment That Shook the Party
Then came the story that electrified grassroots Republicans statewide. *WRAL* reported that **State Senator Amy Galey, the Republican Majority Whip, personally drove to Sheriff Page’s home the night before filing day and left a letter on his doorstep urging him not to run against Berger.
Her letter warned that a Berger vs Page primary would drain money needed to protect vulnerable Republican seats in districts held by Lisa Barnes, Michael Lee, and Chris Measmer. She wrote that demographic shifts were making these seats harder to defend and implied Page’s entry could jeopardize the party’s supermajority.
Galey later said she acted alone, out of concern for the caucus. Page called the letter “insulting” and said candidates should not be pressured out of races by internal party forces.
Grassroots conservatives saw the letter as proof of establishment interference. It became a symbol. A sign that some leaders believe the voters should not decide the race. A sign that backroom moves still shape the ballot.
The doorstep letter became a rallying point for Republicans who are tired of insiders making decisions for them.
The One-Sided Ad Blitz. Silence Speaks Louder Than Sound
Television ads across North Carolina tell a lopsided story. Over and over, attack commercials target Sam Page. They question his fitness, his judgment, and his record. Some reference the SBI investigation. Others allude to controversies without naming sources.
But one thing is missing.
They do not mention Phil Berger.
Not once.
This allows the Senate leader to remain untouched while Page absorbs the entire blast radius. Meanwhile, the only criticism of Berger exists mostly on social media, not on television.
The imbalance is impossible to ignore.
• Page is attacked.
• Berger is insulated.
• Voters see damage but not the hand delivering the blow.
To many Republicans, the pattern is clear.
When the establishment wants a result, the challenger bleeds alone.
Trump’s Endorsement. Strong, But Not Final
President Donald Trump endorsed Phil Berger and encouraged Page to step aside and join a future Trump administration. Page thanked him and declined, saying North Carolina voters deserve a real choice.
Trump’s influence remains powerful. His endorsement lifts candidates. But it does not decide every race. North Carolina voters have rejected Trump-endorsed candidates before. They choose based on local loyalty, local trust, and local history.
For some Republicans, Trump’s endorsement reinforces Berger.
For others, it reinforces Page’s independence.
For many, it made no difference at all.
The Knives Thrown Before the Primary Are the Knives We Trip Over After

There comes a moment in every political movement where the mirror becomes unavoidable. A moment when you cannot outrun the truth or disguise it behind talking points, slick ads, or party slogans. A moment when a party must confront what it has become and decide what it wants to be. And that moment has arrived for Republicans in North Carolina.
Because what we are witnessing right now is not a normal primary. It is not a spirited debate. It is not a competition of ideas. It is a knife fight on the kitchen floor while everyone keeps pretending the broken glass will somehow sweep itself up and walk away.
The Berger versus Page primary is not just a contest between two men. It is a collision between two definitions of leadership, two visions for the future of the state, and two very different understandings of who deserves to choose the direction of the Republican Party.
You can learn a lot from the pattern that repeats itself every election cycle. A challenger rises. A sheriff with grassroots support steps forward. He speaks plainly. He carries the trust of the people he serves. And almost immediately, insiders begin to close ranks. Pressure begins in quiet places. Conversations happen that were never meant to see daylight. And before the voters even have a chance to speak, the political knives come out.
First comes the doorstep letter. A sitting senator driving across county lines to leave a message on the porch of a man who has not even filed yet. A letter telling him not to run. Not because he is unqualified, not because his ideas are unsound, but because his candidacy complicates someone else’s plan. That letter was more than paper. It was a signal. A signal that some leaders inside the Republican Party believe voters are a formality and ballot choices should be pre-arranged for them.
Then come the attack ads. Night after night. Screen after screen. They do not mention Phil Berger by name, but they hammer Sheriff Sam Page relentlessly. They chip at his credibility. They question his judgment. They drag his record through the mud while leaving Berger untouched. They do it so quietly and so carefully you might almost believe no one is responsible. But that silence is revealing. Because if an ad attacks one man but never names the other, it is not an accident. It is a strategy.
Then comes the investigation. The SBI steps in. Documents are missing or delayed. Filings are questioned. Suddenly, a routine bureaucratic matter turns into a political storm. The timing is tight. The messaging is loud. The effect is unmistakable. It does not matter whether the investigation produces anything or nothing at all. The cloud alone becomes a weapon. People see it. People hear it. People feel it. And trust begins to erode.
Then comes the endorsement. Donald Trump himself enters the scene. A powerful voice. A respected leader. A man who still energizes the Republican base like no one else. He gives Berger his blessing. He encourages Page to withdraw and join a future administration. And Page does something rare. He says thank you and still chooses the voters of North Carolina. Because loyalty to the people who elected you has to come before loyalty to political convenience.
All of this reveals something deeper than a primary. It reveals the truth about how Republicans treat each other when power feels threatened. It reveals a party that sharpens knives instead of sharpening ideas. It reveals a leadership structure more interested in protecting incumbents than empowering voters. It reveals a fear that competition will lead to change. And change threatens those who have grown comfortable at the top.
Republicans like to say the real fight is against Democrats. But the truth is far more uncomfortable. The greatest threat to the Republican Party is not coming from the left. It is coming from inside the party itself. From the belief that power must be protected, not earned. That challengers must be discouraged, not debated. That voters must be guided, not trusted.
This internal warfare leaves scars. Deep ones. You cannot stab someone in the spring and expect them to knock doors for you in the fall. You cannot spend months attacking a candidate, insulting his supporters, questioning his integrity, dragging his name through the mud, and then pretend unity will magically appear like sunshine after a storm. Politics does not work that way. People do not work that way.
If the Republican Party wants to thrive in a Constitutional Republic, it must rediscover the principles that built it. Competition. Transparency. Debate. Trust in the voter. Faith in the grassroots. Respect for the people, not only the donors and the insiders.
Because primaries are not supposed to be coronations. Primaries are supposed to be choices. Let the voters decide who leads them. Not letters slipped onto doorsteps. Not silent ad campaigns paid for in shadows. Not investigations timed to convenience. Not endorsements used like weapons.
This is bigger than Sam Page. Bigger than Phil Berger. Bigger than Rockingham County or Raleigh. This is a crossroads for the Republican Party in North Carolina. One path leads to a party controlled from the top down. A party that manages choices instead of offering them. A party that fears its own members more than its political opponents. The other path leads to a party built from the bottom up. A party that trusts the people. A party that values courage over comfort, accountability over control, and ideas over intimidation.
North Carolina deserves a Republican Party that debates without destroying. A party that listens without silencing. A party that trusts its voters more than its power brokers. A party strong enough to handle disagreement without resorting to political assassination.
Because the knives we throw before the primary are the very knives we trip over after the primary. And if Republicans do not learn that lesson soon, then the victories the party claims to fight for will remain forever out of reach. Not because of Democrats. Not because of the media. But because of the wounds we inflict on ourselves.
The choice is here. The crossroads are now. And the future of this party will not be decided by the knives in our hands, but by the people with the courage to finally put them down.
