Biden Asserts Executive Privilege Amid Claims of Cognitive Decline
President Joe Biden has invoked executive privilege to withhold audio recordings that allegedly showcase his cognitive decline, sparking controversy among congressional Republicans.
The recordings in question stem from special counsel Robert Hur’s investigation into Biden’s handling of classified documents. Hur refrained from charging Biden, citing concerns that portraying him as an “elderly man with a poor memory” could bias the jury.
The Buried Tapes: Biden’s assertion of executive privilege came just hours before House Republicans intended to pursue contempt charges against Attorney General Merrick Garland for his refusal to release the recordings.
Republican Demands: Republicans argue that transparency is paramount, asserting that if Biden’s mental acuity was in question to the extent that it warranted mention in Hur’s report, the public deserves access to the evidence. They believe the tapes are vital in assessing whether grounds for Biden’s impeachment exist.
