Biden’s Black Voter Base Erodes Amid Soaring Living Costs
Joe Biden faces an unsettling reality as his once-sturdy support among black voter’s crumbles, signaling a shifting landscape within the Democrat party amid mounting discontent over surging living expenses under Bidenomics.
The backdrop: Biden’s infamous 2020 campaign remark to a black radio host reflects the Democratic Party’s perception that black voters are inherently aligned with them. This assumption about black voter loyalty is now being challenged.
In the 2020 elections, Biden comfortably secured 92% of the black vote compared to Trump’s 8%. However, recent indicators, including declining voter turnout and emerging polling data, hint at a growing disillusionment among the traditionally dependable Democratic voter base.
The aftermath of the 2022 midterms witnessed a significant 10% decline in black voter turnout, marking a potential warning sign for the Democratic Party’s stronghold. Recent polling from The New York Times has revealed a notable surge, with 22% of black voters expressing potential support for Trump in a 2024 rematch, a substantial increase from his 2020 figures.
The driving force behind this shift primarily stems from the ailing economy, characterized by spiraling prices of essential commodities such as food, housing, and gasoline. Notably, black unemployment surged to 5.8% in October, up from 4.7% in April, exacerbating economic distress within the community.
Voices from within the black electorate echo a sense of betrayal. Michelle Smith, a working mother in Philadelphia, expressed disappointment, remarking, “I really did think he was going to help people in my situation.” Similar sentiments were echoed by Mahamadou Diallo, 60, also from Philadelphia, who plans to vote for Trump in 2024, labeling Biden as “a weak man” who failed to instigate substantial change.
In response to the waning support, Democrats have embarked on a frantic campaign blitz, pouring millions into political advertisements in predominantly black cities. August alone witnessed a staggering $25 million expenditure by the DNC on TV ads aimed at retaining black voter loyalty.
Zooming out from the immediate scenario, recent polls showing Trump’s advantage in five out of six key swing states portend significant challenges for Biden and the Democrats.
In the broader perspective, if The New York Times’ poll findings of a potential 22% black support for Trump in 2024 materialize, it would pose a formidable barrier to Biden’s prospects of reelection. The black voting bloc remains pivotal to Biden’s electoral calculus, and its shifting allegiance casts shadows over his potential for securing another term in office.
