Federal Cuts Hit Alamance Schools Hard
On July 14, state leaders gathered to address a growing crisis impacting local schools. Federal education funds, previously approved and allocated to school districts across North Carolina, have been frozen by the federal government. The move is part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to reduce wasteful spending and restore control over the national budget through the Big Beautiful Bill.
Alamance-Burlington School Board Chair Sandy Ellington-Graves stood alongside NC Attorney General Jeff Jackson, State Superintendent Mo Green, and State Board of Education Chair Eric Davis to announce the effects of the freeze. In Alamance County alone, 1.7 million dollars in expected funds have been locked, with over 165 million frozen across the entire state.
These funds were allocated specifically to support multilingual learners, who now make up 17 percent of the Alamance-Burlington student population. That is approximately 4,000 students.
Programs impacted include:

* Literacy tutors
* Teacher coordinators
* Mental health counselors
“These are not luxuries,”
Ellington-Graves said.
“They are essential to a functioning school system.”
The Big Beautiful Bill and the Price of Reform
The funding freeze is one of many outcomes tied to the Big Beautiful Bill, a sweeping legislative effort signed by President Trump to rein in out-of-control federal spending. After years of unchecked government programs and ballooning deficits, this bill aims to reduce waste and force agencies to prove their need for funding.
The plan is to streamline federal priorities, return authority to the states, and end runaway spending. But these changes are already hitting local communities with real consequences.
Western North Carolina Left Hanging as Federal Aid Disappears
It is not just schools that are facing budget cuts. Communities in Western North Carolina have also been hit hard by the early termination of disaster recovery funds.
Rural and mountain counties like Haywood, Swain, and Jackson, which are still recovering from historic floods, landslides, and storm damage, were promised multi-year rebuilding support. That included projects for roads, bridges, water systems, and emergency services.
Now, under the Big Beautiful Bill, those commitments are being scaled back or eliminated entirely. Local officials say Washington is pulling out before the work is done.
This is not just an administrative change. These cuts affect real families and real recovery. The concern among these mountain communities is that they are being punished for being quiet and conservative. When help was needed, they did not riot or protest. Now they are being left behind.
Alamance County: A Key North Carolina Battleground
The decision to freeze funding for Alamance-Burlington is especially significant given the importance of Alamance County to the state of North Carolina.
Located in the heart of the Piedmont, Alamance County connects the Triad and Triangle regions. With over 180,000 residents, it includes a mix of agricultural areas, historic towns, and rapidly growing suburban communities.
Alamance is a political and cultural bellwether for the state. Elections are often decided in counties like this. When Alamance is stressed, the entire state should pay attention.
The Alamance-Burlington School System serves over 23,000 students and is one of the largest employers in the area. The growing number of multilingual learners, now nearly one in five students, has placed a heavy demand on the district’s resources.
The federal funds now frozen were intended to help meet that demand. Without them, Alamance may be forced to cut teachers and support staff or raise local taxes to cover the gap. Neither option is acceptable to a community already working hard to stay balanced.
Are States Being Set Up to Fail?
Supporters of the Big Beautiful Bill still believe in the mission to clean up Washington and bring order to a bloated system. But they are starting to ask hard questions.
Are states being asked to take on too much at once?
Local school boards cannot borrow money like the federal government. They cannot delay votes or pass off debt to the next generation. They are forced to make decisions now with the resources they have.
North Carolina communities are being told to do more with less. They are being asked to cover the fallout from decades of federal mismanagement. And they are being given no plan and no help.
What About the Multilingual Students?
The freeze on funding aimed at multilingual students also raises a larger question.
Who are these students?
The rise in multilingual enrollment closely matches the years of unchecked illegal immigration during the Biden administration. While not all multilingual learners are undocumented, it is reasonable to question whether local school districts are being stretched by federal border failures.
If the federal government created the conditions that led to this demographic shift, why is it now pulling away from funding the solution?
Taxpayers were never asked if they wanted their schools transformed by open border policies. Parents were never told that they would be funding programs for non-citizens out of their own pockets. And now they are being told to stay quiet while federal aid disappears.
When Accountability Meets Reality and Communities Pay the Price

President Trump is doing what others refused to do. The Big Beautiful Bill is forcing Washington to cut the fat and restore discipline to government spending. That is necessary and overdue.
But reform must come with responsibility. If the federal government is going to stop spending, it must also stop creating new burdens for states to carry.
You cannot cut education support and ignore the immigration crisis that is overwhelming local school systems. You cannot walk away from disaster recovery projects and call it savings.
Real reform means protecting Americans first. That includes their classrooms, their communities, and their children.
