“I’ve seen the projections. An EMP that took down the electrical grid could result in, over time, millions of deaths in America,” Cruz said, citing warnings from the Congressional EMP Commission as stated on his podcast Verdict with Ted Cruz, co-hosted by Ben Ferguson.
Cruz isn’t fearmongering. The Congressional EMP Commission, a bipartisan panel of defense experts, has echoed similar catastrophic outcomes. Their report warns that if the grid were disabled, up to 90% of Americans could die within a year due to mass starvation, lack of medical care, and societal collapse.
“An extended blackout today could result in the death of a large fraction of the American people through the effects of societal collapse, disease, and starvation,”
reads the Commission’s executive summary.
This isn’t science fiction. The Pentagon has identified Iran, along with China, Russia, and North Korea, as nations actively exploring EMP warfare. Unlike a traditional nuclear strike requiring advanced missile systems, such an attack could be delivered by a satellite or a smuggled device detonated in or near a U.S. port.
Cruz emphasized that such an attack wouldn’t even require advanced intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). A nuclear warhead could be placed on a satellite, smuggled into a port city, or detonated from a disguised container ship.
He added that Iran’s ICBM development has nothing to do with targeting Israel, it’s aimed directly at us.
“Do they have a reliable ICBM that could carry a nuclear weapon from Iran to Manhattan? Probably not, although they’re trying to develop them… One hundred percent of the reason Iran has an ICBM program is to carry a nuclear warhead to America. Israel is not the target of their ICBMs. America is.”
The Commission’s report is stark:
“Nine of 10 Americans are dead from starvation, disease, and societal collapse. The United States of America ceases to exist.”
Cruz echoed that grim assessment, emphasizing that Iran’s intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) program is designed with one target in mind, not Israel, but America.
“You do not need an ICBM to get to Israel from Iran… An intercontinental ballistic missile is designed to travel much further. One hundred percent of the reason Iran has an ICBM program is to carry a nuclear warhead to America,”
Cruz warned.
