China funnels $17 million to U.S. public schools
The Chinese Communist Party funneled an alarming $17 million into K-12 schools in the U.S. through cultural and language programs like the Confucious Institutes, according to a report from the Parents Defending Education [PDE].C
onfucius Institutes have established relationships with 143 U.S. school districts in 34 states and Washington, D.C., some near U.S. military bases. These partnerships extend back to 2009 and are said to serve Beijing’s global influence agenda.
Influence peddling: The PDE report outlines how China uses these programs “to further the Chinese Communist Party’s global influence.”
National security threat: Amid growing concerns about this influence, Republicans, like Rep. Jim Banks and Sen. Roger Marshall, are urging the Biden administration and the Education Department to act with urgency and terminate these partnerships.
Banks said:
“Accepting funding and influence from our greatest adversary is a threat to America’s children and national security.”
Former President Trump previously designated the Confuscious Institutes as a “foreign mission” which helped shut down some of their programs in the U.S.
The good news is: Under the 2021 National Defense Authorization Act, funding for Confucius Institutes by the Pentagon will cease after October 1, 2023. Since the act’s passage, over 100 U.S. universities have closed their Confucius Institutes, with 108 more in the process of closing.
