We love our libraries, we stand with battered women’s shelters, and we count on rescue squads when emergencies hit. But make no mistake, wanting services is not a blank check.
Here in Alamance County, commissioners raised property taxes by 2.5 cents, about a 5.3% hike, to preserve those services. That decision wasn’t easy, and some say it had to be done to prevent cuts to schools, libraries, abuse services, and emergency response ([wfdd.org][1], [elonnewsnetwork.com][2]). Great, those are services that align with our community values, but every dollar sent to government must answer to the taxpayer.

For instance, at the budget hearing, one commissioner pointed out that spreading library operations across four branches plus two mobile units with 61 employees, not all full-time, may not provide the “bang for the buck” our taxpayers deserve ([wxii12.com][3]). The County Manager floated shifting library responsibilities to municipalities instead of increasing taxes. It’s not about slashing books, it’s about verifying that every position and expenditure delivers maximum value.
And then you have ABSS, the school system still facing a $13 million shortfall even after the tax bump, with only $11.3 million funded so far. The Board triggered statutory mediation to seek more, but again we must ask: have they first audited every line item? Have they presented a lean, transparent request?
