D-Day Anniversary Reminds Us of Our Constitutional Republic’s Commitment to Liberty

Decades ago, Allied Forces launched Operation Overlord, famously known as D-Day, to liberate France from Nazi Germany. On the eve of this historic invasion, General Dwight D. Eisenhower conveyed a powerful message to the courageous men about to undertake this critical mission. Eisenhower’s message included the stirring words:

“You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hope and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you… I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full Victory! Good luck! And let us beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking.”

This monumental event saw over 150,000 U.S., British, and Canadian troops storming the beaches of Normandy, enduring heavy casualties but ultimately achieving success. This operation marked a pivotal turning point in World War II, showcasing the resilience and determination of those fighting for freedom.

As we reflect on this significant moment in history, we honor the bravery of the men who stormed those beaches, particularly the 4,414 who made the ultimate sacrifice. Their valor and dedication remind us of the enduring principles upon which our Constitutional Republic is founded, ensuring our democracy and the liberties we hold dear.
