The Democrat National Convention (DNC) began in Chicago, marked by internal party strife and violent protests outside the United Center. The event, characterized by many as a “circus,” displayed the deepening fractures within the Democratic Party while the Constitutional Republic, which the DNC seeks to lead, faces significant challenges.
Disrespect for Biden Within the Party
On the first night of the DNC, the Democratic Party gave a less-than-ceremonial send-off to Joe Biden, who was removed from the 2024 ticket after a party coup. Notably, Biden was not allowed to speak until nearly midnight, well past the prime-time hours of 8 to 11 PM, a decision that many observers viewed as disrespectful. CBS correspondent Mark Knoller criticized the move, saying, “They took the nomination away from him and now booted him out of prime time.” TIME reporter Charlotte Alter also noted, “Pushing Biden out of prime time is a huge mistake.” An anonymous Biden aide reportedly told Axios, “This is awful. He literally set up a campaign and handed it over to them—do they have to cut him out of prime time?”
Biden’s speech, delivered late at night, followed the pattern expected from his recent addresses. He raised his voice throughout, attacking former President Donald Trump with claims that have already been debunked, even by left-wing fact-checkers. The DNC’s decision to sideline Biden reflects a broader tension within the party as it shifts away from the current administration, raising questions about its unity and leadership.
Voices from the Podium: Clinton and AOC
The first night also featured speeches from prominent Democrats like Hillary Clinton and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC). Clinton appeared to relish the ongoing legal battles faced by Trump, commenting on his legal troubles by saying he is “The first person to run for president with 34 felony convictions.” Meanwhile, AOC delivered a fiery speech, claiming, “Donald Trump would sell this country for a dollar if it meant lining his own pockets,” despite the fact that Trump donated his presidential salary every year while in office.
These remarks highlight the Democrats’ strategy of focusing on Trump’s past, rather than offering a clear vision for the future. The emphasis on Trump’s legal issues and unproven allegations of corruption may resonate with some voters, but it also risks alienating those who are more concerned with substantive policy debates.
Chaos Outside the Arena: Planned Parenthood and Protests
Outside the DNC venue, the scene was no less chaotic. Planned Parenthood set up an oversized van offering free abortions and vasectomies, with appointments reportedly booked out before the event even started. This move is emblematic of the Democratic Party’s alignment with radical positions on reproductive rights, a stance that continues to be divisive among the American public.
Simultaneously, pro-Palestine protesters gathered in large numbers to express their opposition to the Democratic Party’s stance on the Israel-Palestine conflict. The protests escalated to the point where rioters tore down walls erected around the arena, breaching the safety perimeter. The irony was not lost on observers, as the same party that opposes a wall at the southern border to prevent illegal immigration found it necessary to erect walls to protect themselves from their own radical factions.
Trump and Vance Launch Counter-Programming
As the DNC unfolded in Chicago, Donald Trump and Senator J.D. Vance launched a counter-programming campaign, conducting a multi-state tour aimed at highlighting Vice President Kamala Harris’s record. The strategy focuses on connecting with voters in key swing states, contrasting the Democratic Party’s internal struggles with a message of economic renewal and national security.
Trump kicked off the tour with a speech in York, Pennsylvania, where he emphasized his policies on trade, tax cuts, energy independence, and tariffs. Vance, meanwhile, began his efforts in Philadelphia, discussing economic and energy issues while drawing sharp distinctions between the Trump agenda and the Biden-Harris record.
Strategic Implications
The decision by Trump and Vance to engage voters directly in swing states while the Democrats are preoccupied with their convention in Chicago is a calculated move. It allows the Republican Party to present a united front and address the concerns of voters in critical regions. As the Democratic Party grapples with internal discord and external pressures, the Republicans are positioning themselves as the party of stability and common sense governance, appealing to a Constitutional Republic that prioritizes liberty and the rule of law.
While the DNC focuses on ceremonial speeches and internal politics, the Trump campaign’s focus on grassroots engagement could prove to be a more effective strategy in the long run.
