Don’t tread on Jaiden: Celebrating Jaiden’s Expression of Identity
A young boy has recently gained significant attention across social media platforms, capturing the hearts of many.
Jaiden, a 12-year-old student, found himself in the midst of a situation where he was asked to remove a Gadsden flag patch from his backpack at a Colorado elementary school. School administrators, believing the flag had connections to slavery, expressed concerns and made the request.
The incident was documented in a video, apparently filmed by Jaiden’s mother. The video showcases a discussion between Jaiden, his mother, and a school staff member regarding the Gadsden flag and the school’s policy. The staff member explained their stance, stating, “We’re cautious about displaying the flag due to its historical associations with slavery and the slave trade.” In response, Jaiden’s mother inquired about the consequences if the patch wasn’t removed. The staff member clarified, “The bag won’t be allowed if it has the patch… as we aim to create a comfortable environment for all students.”

The Gadsden Flag, designed in 1775 by Christopher Gadsen during the early days of the American Revolution, served as a symbol of resistance against British colonial rule. Depicting a rattlesnake poised to strike, accompanied by the words “Don’t Tread On Me,” the flag carries historical significance within American history, unrelated to slavery.
The incident prompted a political response, with Colorado’s governor, Jared Polis, voicing his support for Jaiden. He commented, “The Gadsden flag stands as a proud symbol of the American Revolution.”
Following public outcry, the school’s board of directors swiftly organized an emergency meeting. The outcome was a decision that Jaiden would not be required to remove the flag patch from his backpack.
