Elon Musk vows to go after companies that fire employees over online speech
Elon Musk pledged financial support to anyone punished by their employer for things they say or ‘like’ on his social media platform, X.
For anyone not following social media closely, Elon Musk recently renamed Twitter, replacing it with the single-letter name – X.
The details: On Saturday August 5th 2023 Musk posted: “If you were unfairly treated by your employer due to posting or liking something on this platform, we will fund your legal bill. No limit. Please let us know.”
Doubling down: When X user Austen Allred posted “Elon understands that nothing changes behavior in the United States faster than threat of legal action”, Musk responded, saying:
“And we won’t just sue, it will be extremely loud and we will go after the boards of directors of the companies too”
In related news: NASCAR driver Noah Gragson was recently suspended for simply ‘liking’ a meme posted to X about George Floyd.
This announcement from Musk comes just days after X filed a lawsuit against a non-profit that it claims unlawfully accessed private data and cherry picked specific posts to creature the illusion that there had been a rise in hate speech on the platform, in order to drive advertisers away.
