A former FBI supervisory special agent involved in the Hunter Biden case was unable to conduct an interview with the first son after the agency informed the Secret Service and the Biden transition team, according to recently released transcripts.
The agent, who had a lengthy career at the FBI and retired from the bureau last year, participated in an interview with the Oversight Committee last month.
During the course of the Hunter Biden investigation, which commenced in 2018, the FBI scheduled an interview with Hunter Biden. This interview was planned for December 8, 2020, a few weeks after the presidential election. The agent recognized the necessity of informing the Secret Service for safety reasons but intended to notify them on the morning of the interview at 8 a.m. to express their intention to speak with Hunter.
However, the evening prior to the interview, the agent discovered that both the Secret Service and the Biden transition team had already been informed. This early notification raised concerns that a group closely associated with President Biden and Hunter Biden was alerted, potentially enabling them to hinder the interview process.
The agent expressed his belief that while notifying the Secret Service was appropriate for safety and logistical reasons, the initial advance notification seemed unnecessary. He was then instructed to provide his contact information to the Secret Service and was advised to wait outside for a call indicating Hunter’s readiness for the interview. This waiting approach was unusual for the agent, who had never encountered a similar protocol in his experience.
Regrettably, the expected call was never received, and the agent, with other interviews to conduct, eventually departed the scene.
Regarding the Biden transition team’s awareness of the situation, the agent stated he was uncertain about the rationale behind their notification.
It’s important to note that this distinctive interview attempt took place during the Trump administration, while U.S. Attorney David Weiss in Delaware was overseeing the Hunter Biden case. Weiss has since been designated as special counsel for the case, granting him greater autonomy from the main Department of Justice.
When queried about whether U.S. Attorney David Weiss had ever made prosecutorial decisions influenced by politics, the agent replied in the negative.
IRS whistleblower Gary Shapley, who collaborated with the FBI agent on the Hunter Biden case, disclosed earlier this month that the agent had been directed by the DOJ not to provide information before the interview.
Although the FBI headquarters had informed the Secret Service and the Biden transition team about the intention to interview Hunter Biden in December 2020, the agent was limited in what he could share during his testimony.
Both the Biden transition team and the Secret Service were apprised of the FBI’s intention to speak with Hunter.
The FBI and Delaware US Attorney’s Office asserted their inability to fully disclose details to Congress due to an “ongoing investigation,” referring to the recent developments in the Hunter Biden plea deal.
Shapley and Ziegler, the IRS whistleblowers, suggested that politics may have influenced the Department of Justice’s decision not to charge Hunter Biden with a felony, even after the IRS investigation recommended such a charge.
However, the testifying FBI agent emphasized that he had not witnessed any instances of decision-making based on political considerations within the Delaware U.S. attorney’s office, which managed the case. He further noted that disagreements between FBI agents and prosecutors regarding investigative approaches and charging determinations were commonplace.
