GOP House Greenlights Pelosi-Style Spending Spree
In a surprising move, the Republican-controlled House has given the nod to a ‘minibus’ spending bill, mirroring the budgetary patterns set by Nancy Pelosi. Despite promises to GOP voters, the legislation, encompassing a portion of government funding, garnered significant support from Democrats, raising questions about the GOP’s commitment to fiscal conservatism.
The $460 billion minibus bundles six smaller spending bills that cater to the Departments of Agriculture, Commerce, Energy, Housing and Urban Development, Interior, Justice, Transportation, and Veterans Affairs. In a 339-85 vote, the bill secured passage, with 207 Democrats and 132 Republicans voting in favor, while 2 Democrats and 83 Republicans opposed it.
Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries lauded the bill for its proposed investments in affordable housing, climate crisis combat, and nutrition support for women, infants, and children. Meanwhile, Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican supporter, emphasized provisions preventing the Department of Justice from interfering with free speech rights at school boards and thwarting Biden’s attempts to curtail Second Amendment rights for veterans. Johnson also highlighted apparent “deep cuts” to specific federal agencies, although the overall spending figure remains unchanged.
Notably, Representative Thomas Massie emerged as a vocal opponent, denouncing the bill for resorting to “budget gimmicks and earmarks.” Massie argued that the Republican-led House greenlighted a minibus that exceeded Pelosi’s previous year’s spending, questioning the party’s commitment to conservative fiscal principles.
Despite voters granting Republicans control of the House with the expectation of leveraging their influence on border issues and spending reduction, the approved minibus extends the budgetary trajectory initiated by Pelosi’s House in December 2022. The Senate and, inevitably, Joe Biden are anticipated to endorse the bill within the next 48 hours.
Looking ahead, the looming March 22 deadline marks the cutoff for funding the remaining government sectors, encompassing defense and social services, with a staggering allocation of over $1 trillion. The trajectory set by this minibus raises concerns among conservative voters about the GOP’s dedication to upholding fiscal responsibility.
