GOP-Led House Surrenders to Pelosi’s Spending Spree
In a move that disappointed conservative Republicans, the GOP-led House voted to extend government funding until March, avoiding a partial government shutdown but sidestepping crucial conservative issues.
The ‘continuing resolution’ sailed through the lower chamber with a 314-108 vote, receiving support from 207 Democrats and 107 Republicans, while facing opposition from 2 Democrats and 106 Republicans. But what exactly is a ‘continuing resolution’? It’s a stopgap measure that maintains current funding levels, allowing the government to operate temporarily.
Republican dissent stems from the party’s push for concessions from Democrats on securing the southern border and curbing runaway deficit spending. The House Freedom Caucus expressed their frustration in a statement, declaring, “Americans did not give Republicans a majority in the House to continue Nancy Pelosi’s inflationary spending and Joe Biden’s failed policies. This is not what we promised the American people.”
Despite Republicans gaining control of the House a year ago, the budget still traces back to Pelosi and the Democrats’ decision in December 2022. Under the leadership of Kevin McCarthy and now Mike Johnson, the GOP-controlled House has repeatedly opted for ‘continuing resolutions,’ perpetuating the spending levels set by Pelosi, Schumer, and Biden.
The bill, having secured Senate approval, is set to land on Joe Biden’s desk today, awaiting his signature to become law. This decision effectively kicks the fiscal can down the road until early March, leaving key conservative concerns unaddressed.
Representative Chip Roy voiced the collective frustration, stating, “Every single person that I’ve talked to cannot understand how a body that’s supposed to be representative of the people comes here and manages to make this country worse on a daily basis.” The sentiment echoes the disappointment among conservatives as the GOP-led House falls short of delivering on promises and continues to endorse the spending trajectory set by the Democratic leadership.
