Is Pride Month Showing Us Who Is Defending Values And Who Just Wants Gay People Silent Again?

A person can tell you they support freedom all day long. Then Pride Month rolls around, a rainbow flag appears, and suddenly, the freedom talk gets very selective.

That is what makes this season so revealing.

Some people will say they are only against radical politics. Then they laugh at memes of stick figures kicking rainbow gays. Some will say they are only tired of corporate Pride. Then they cheer when someone posts an AI video showing an LGBTQ figure getting beaten. Some will say they only care about children. Then their comments turn into open mockery of gay adults, gay families, and gay Americans who have nothing to do with the latest internet outrage.

At some point, the excuse stops working.

This is not about forcing anyone to celebrate Pride Month. Nobody has to attend a parade. Nobody has to wave a flag. Nobody has to like every activist group, every corporate ad, every drag event, every political slogan, or every letter attached to the modern LGBTQ movement.

I have criticized plenty of that myself.

But criticism is one thing. Celebrating humiliation or violence is something else entirely.

And this year, too many people are pretending not to know the difference.

Before proceeding, the word “woke” needs to be handled with care. It has become one of those words people throw around without defining. Some use it to mean radical identity politics. Some use it to mean left-wing cultural activism. Some use it for corporate virtue signaling. Some use it for gender ideology in schools or medical debates involving minors.

But others use “woke” as a lazy way to attack anything involving gay people, civil rights, race, gender, or public visibility. That is where the word becomes a shield. Someone says “anti woke,” but what they really mean is anti gay. Someone says “protect the children,” but their meme is aimed at every rainbow flag in sight. Someone says “traditional values,” but their joke is about putting people back in the closet.

Those are not the same arguments, and we should stop conflating them.

When Did Criticizing Activism Turn Into Mocking Gay People?

I have been part of this fight for a long time.

I have run a right-of-center, sensible, Constitution-based gay group for over a decade. I created space for gay conservatives, gay Republicans, gay Trump supporters, gay Christians, independents, moderates, and people who do not fit inside the Left’s political box.

That matters because the Left does not own gay people.

But the Right does not get to treat us like unwanted guests in our own country either.

There are gay Americans who believe in free speech. There are gay Americans who support religious liberty. There are gay Americans who believe parents matter. There are gay Americans who want secure borders, limited government, law and order, strong families, personal responsibility, and a Constitutional Republic that applies its protections equally.

There are gay Americans who support President Trump. There are gay Americans who reject radical gender ideology. There are gay Americans who do not want children dragged into adult activism. There are gay Americans who think some Pride events lost the plot.

But none of that means we should sit quietly while people use Pride Month as open season on gay people.

Being against radical identity politics does not require mocking gay Americans.

Rejecting corporate Pride does not require laughing at violence.

Opposing gender ideology in schools does not require treating every gay person like a public nuisance.

If someone cannot make their argument without turning gay people into the punchline, maybe the problem is not the argument. Maybe the problem is what they wanted to say all along.

What Message Does A Fake Beating Video Actually Send?

The reported Sean Strickland post involving an AI-style video of himself beating up Dylan Mulvaney is a perfect example of how ugly this has gotten.

People can argue all day about Dylan Mulvaney. They can criticize the Bud Light campaign. They can reject transgender ideology. They can say the whole thing became a ridiculous corporate and cultural mess.

Fine.

But a trained professional fighter posting imagery of himself beating up someone widely associated with the LGBTQ community is not normal political commentary.

It is not just “a joke.”

It is a man who knows how to hurt people, turning an LGBTQ target into a punching bag for online applause.

That matters.

A fake video can still feed a real attitude. It can still teach an audience who they are allowed to laugh at. It can still tell angry people that certain targets are fair game.

And no, this is not about banning every offensive joke on the internet. Free speech matters. People have the right to say ugly things. But the rest of us have the right to say what it is.

When someone cheers on the image of a man beating someone who presents as a woman, or someone connected to the LGBTQ community, that is not defending family values. That is not saving America from radical politics. That is taking a political disagreement and dragging it into the language of physical domination.

A conservative movement that cannot tell the difference between disagreement and public fantasies of violence has a serious problem.

Why Is Gay Marriage Being Blamed For Everything Else?

This becomes even more important as support for same sex marriage has slipped from its peak.

Gallup reported that 65 percent of Americans now say same sex marriages should be legally valid, down from 71 percent in 2022 and 2023. The bigger warning sign is among Republicans, where support has dropped to 37 percent after reaching 55 percent in 2021 and 2022. (Gallup.com)

That should make every gay conservative pay attention.

Yet instead of asking why people are turning against marriage equality, some are busy helping the opposition write its talking points. They blame trans people. They blame queer activists. They blame drag queens. They blame Pride. They post the slippery slope memes and act like they have uncovered some grand truth.

“First they wanted marriage, then they wanted this, then they wanted that, and now look what happened.”

That argument does not hold up.

Trans activists are not the ones getting same sex married. Drag queens are not the reason two men or two women need hospital visitation rights, inheritance protections, tax recognition, parental stability, and legal recognition as a family.

Same sex marriage is about two consenting adults building a life together under the law.

When people pretend that gay marriage caused every controversy now attached to the broader LGBTQ movement, they are really saying gay people should have been denied equal rights from the beginning. They may not say it that plainly, but that is where the logic leads.

And some gay people are repeating it because they think it separates them from the unpopular parts of the movement.

It does not.

It tells people who already disliked us that even we agree that our rights opened the door to social collapse.

That is not a strategy. That is self-sabotage.

Why Do Bad Examples Only Define Gay People?

There are more than 2.5 million LGBTQ adults parenting children under 18 in their households, according to the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law. The same research reports that same sex couples who parent adopt and foster at higher rates than different sex couples. (Williams Institute)

That part rarely makes the meme.

People do not want to talk about gay parents packing school lunches, helping with homework, sitting through Little League games, taking kids to church, paying taxes, working overtime, and trying to keep their families stable in a country that keeps arguing over whether they should exist in public.

They want the worst image from the worst parade.

They want the weirdest clip from the biggest city.

They want one criminal case, one outrageous activist, one drag performance, one viral meltdown, and then they use it as a paint roller over millions of people.

But that standard is never applied evenly.

If a straight couple abuses a child, we do not blame heterosexual marriage.

If a straight teacher commits a crime, we do not say straight people should lose rights.

If a straight celebrity behaves badly, we do not say every straight family is dangerous.

So why does one bad gay person become a symbol for all of us?

Predators should be punished. Public indecency should be condemned. Adults who sexualize children should be called out. Crimes should be prosecuted.

But rights do not vanish because bad people exist.

If they did, nobody would have rights left.

Who Is Actually Creating The “Lumping” They Complain About?

This is where some people inside our own community need to look in the mirror.

They complain that everyone lumps gay people, lesbians, bisexuals, trans people, drag queens, activists, corporations, and Pride events together. Then they turn around and post memes that do exactly that.

They say, “Stop associating me with that mess,” while sharing posts that tell the public the mess is all connected.

They use the most extreme Pride image they can find and pretend it represents a small town Pride event, a married lesbian couple, a gay Republican voter, a gay churchgoer, a gay veteran, and every ordinary gay person who just wants to live without being treated like a political disease.

Then they wonder why the public cannot tell the difference.

If you spend every day telling people that gay visibility equals perversion, people will believe gay visibility is the problem.

If you post over and over that Pride is nothing but filth, people will not separate the activists from the ordinary citizens.

If you keep saying gay rights led to everything you hate, do not be shocked when anti gay activists start asking why gay rights exist at all.

You may think you are distancing yourself from the Left.

But you may actually be helping people who never accepted gay Americans in the first place.

Can We Draw Lines Without Burning Down Our Own House?

Yes.

We can criticize radical identity politics.

We can reject gender ideology being pushed on children.

We can oppose explicit public displays.

We can call out corporations that use rainbow logos as a marketing stunt.

We can defend parental rights.

We can support religious freedom.

We can tell the Left they do not own the gay community.

We can tell the Right that gay conservatives are not going anywhere.

That is the balance.

A person can oppose public indecency without mocking gay marriage.

A person can reject gender ideology in schools without cheering videos of LGBTQ people getting beaten.

A person can be Christian and still understand that the First Amendment does not make America a theocracy.

A person can be conservative and still believe gay citizens deserve equal protection under the law.

That is not a weakness.

That is the Constitution applied consistently.

Why Pride Still Has A Purpose

The annual backlash proves the point more than the parades ever could.

If Pride were only about corporate logos and rainbow merchandise, then maybe it would be easy to dismiss. But the hostility that shows up every year tells another story.

Some people are not mad about corporations.

They are mad that gay people are visible.

Some people are not mad about public indecency.

They are mad that gay couples exist outside of hiding.

Some people are not mad about politics.

They are mad that a gay conservative can say, “I am here, I am Republican, I support the Constitution, and I refuse to disappear for your comfort.”

That is why Pride still matters.

Not the tacky parts. Not the corporate parts. Not the activist slogans that alienate ordinary people.

The real purpose.

Visibility. Memory. Equal citizenship. The right to live without being shoved back into silence.

No one has to celebrate Pride Month. But nobody should expect me to sit quietly while people use it as a season to mock gay Americans, laugh at violence, or pretend anti gay behavior is just a harmless joke.

Are Some People Fighting Radical Politics Or Just Waiting For Permission To Say What They Think About Gay People?

The Go Right with Peter Boykin Perspective

Here is the question I keep coming back to.

Are some people truly fighting radical activist politics, or are they using radical activist politics as the excuse they needed to go after gay people again?

Because I know the difference.

If you oppose gender ideology being pushed on children, say that.

If you oppose explicit adult content at public events, say that.

If you oppose corporations slapping rainbow logos on products while ignoring real Americans, say that.

If you oppose the Left turning identity into a political weapon, say that.

I may even agree with you.

But if your answer is a meme of rainbow gays getting kicked, an AI video of an LGBTQ figure getting beaten, or a joke about making June less gay, then do not pretend this is all about policy.

That is personal.

That is aimed at people like me.

And I am not going to pretend otherwise just to make the room more comfortable.

I will criticize the Left when they deserve it. I will call out radical nonsense when I see it. I will defend children, parental rights, religious liberty, free speech, and the Constitution.

But I will also defend gay Americans.

I will defend gay conservatives.

I will defend the right of gay citizens to live openly, marry legally, build families, practice faith, vote Republican, support President Trump, reject the Left, and still not be treated like second-class Americans by the Right.

The Left does not own us.

The Right should not reject us.

The Constitution does not stop at the closet door.

And marriage equality should not be treated like a bargaining chip every time the culture war needs a new target.

Because once people normalize mocking gay Americans, once they normalize cheering violence, once they normalize the idea that we should be pushed back into hiding, they will not stop with Dylan Mulvaney. They will not stop with Pride. They will not stop with the TQ plus.

They will come back for the G and the L, too.

Some of us have been warning about that for years.

And Pride Month keeps proving why we had to say it.
