Joe Biden Invokes Executive Privilege to Withhold Hunter Biden’s Business-Related Emails
The White House has cited executive privilege in its decision to withhold a significant number of emails pertaining to Hunter Biden’s business dealings and communications involving then-Vice President Joe Biden. These actions were in response to a request made by the conservative group America First Legal (AFL).
AFL recently released three batches of emails it obtained through a records request made in August 2022 to the National Archives. These emails, totaling over 1,000, encompassed correspondences between Hunter Biden’s consulting firm, Rosemont Seneca, and the Office of the Vice President. Notably, the White House chose to withhold around 200 emails, justifying this decision on the grounds that these emails contained confidential advice shared between the President and his advisors.
It’s important to recall that President Joe Biden has previously maintained that he never engaged in discussions with his son regarding his international business dealings. This stance was echoed during his candidacy in 2019 when he emphasized the importance of maintaining a clear separation between personal and governmental matters during his presidency, mirroring the approach he took as Vice President.
In addition to business-related discussions, the released emails also shed light on Hunter Biden’s involvement in planning various White House events. Among these events was the January 2011 China State Luncheon. Documents obtained by AFL indicate that email correspondences containing references to “Rosemont Seneca” included guest lists for this particular event held on January 19, 2011.
It is worth noting that Hunter Biden’s former business partner, Devin Archer, testified before the House Oversight Committee in July, stating that he had heard Hunter discuss his business dealings with his father on more than 20 occasions.
