Internal communications between the Biden administration and major tech companies reveal potential unconstitutional coercion to censor online content, particularly regarding COVID-19, according to House Republicans.
The Breakdown: Recently, the House Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government, led by Republicans, unveiled a report shedding light on what they allege to be the Biden administration’s exertion of pressure on big tech firms like Facebook, Google, and Amazon. The aim? To stifle free speech and manipulate public discourse, the report suggests.
Constitutional Considerations: While the government can engage in dialogue with private entities, it cannot legally force them into compliance with its agenda.
The Unveiling: While the Biden administration insists its communications were merely suggestions, leaked correspondences indicate a different story…
Zuckerberg, in one exchange, queried colleagues: “Can we include that the WH put pressure on us to censor the lab leak theory?” From a constitutionalist perspective, this appears to be a blatant instance of Biden exerting influence over Facebook.
In a WhatsApp chat involving Zuckerberg and Nick Clegg [VP of Global Affairs], Clegg remarked: “The behavior of the WH over the last 24 hours has been highly cynical and dishonest.”
Zuckerberg, in an email to Facebook executives, cautioned: “This seems like a good reminder that when we compromise our standards due to pressure from an administration in either direction, we’ll often regret it later.”
Collateral Damage: The report also exposes emails among Amazon executives revealing alterations in policies under pressure from the Biden administration.
These internal communications were brought to light thanks to a subpoena issued by Judiciary Committee chairman Rep. Jim Jordan.
The release of this report coincides with a forthcoming Supreme Court ruling in Murthy v. Missouri, which aims to determine whether the Biden administration crossed the line from persuasion to coercion.
