In a covert move, the Biden administration greenlit the shipment of long-range missiles to Ukraine, marking a significant shift in U.S. policy towards the ongoing conflict with Russia. Despite reservations about our own domestic supplies and fears of provoking Russian retaliation, the decision underscores a strategic commitment to bolstering Ukrainian defenses.
According to Politico, the transfer includes Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS), sought by Ukraine for years due to their extended range capability. Initially hesitant due to concerns over domestic inventory and the potential for Ukrainian incursions into Russia, the administration’s stance shifted following Congress’s approval of a $61 billion aid package to Ukraine.
The new aid package, totaling $1 billion, will not only provide ATACMS but also Stinger anti-aircraft missiles, artillery rounds, Bradley Fighting Vehicles, Javelin anti-tank systems, and Claymore anti-personnel munitions.
The decision to supply ATACMS comes amidst Russia’s increasingly aggressive tactics, including attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and the utilization of missiles from North Korea. These developments, coupled with Biden’s approval, signal a strategic shift aimed at empowering Ukraine against Russian encroachment.
While the administration views the ATACMS as a game-changer, officials remain cautious about overstating its impact on the battlefield. Politico reports skepticism within the administration about whether the aid is sufficient for Ukraine to achieve a decisive victory.
“The immediate goal is to stop Ukrainian losses and help Ukraine regain momentum and turn the tide on the battlefield,” an official told Politico. “After that, the goal is to help Ukraine begin to regain its territory.”
Despite these efforts, the complexity of military operations and Russia’s formidable presence in the region make victory far from assured. As the conflict continues, the Biden administration navigates a delicate balance between supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and managing the risks of escalating tensions with Russia.
