Political Interference, Not Justice
Constitutionalists for Liberty express alarm over Judge Juan Merchan’s unprecedented ruling in the trial of former President Donald Trump, a decision that threatens the integrity of our constitutional democracy.
Merchan has granted jurors the extraordinary power to convict Trump of a crime, despite their inability to unanimously agree on the specific offense committed. This deviation from established legal principles raises grave concerns about the fairness and impartiality of the trial.
Legal experts have roundly condemned Merchan’s decision. Jonathan Turley, a well-respected legal analyst, likened the jury’s deliberations to “a canned hunt,” while Andy McCarthy, a former federal prosecutor, decried the “making up of rules” to achieve a desired outcome. Even Alan Dershowitz, a liberal Democrat and law professor, criticized the judge’s instructions as “designed and calculated to produce conviction.”
Trump himself denounced the charges as “rigged” and accused the judge of depriving him of “specificity” and “fairness.”
Opinion: Political Interference, Not Justice
In the view of this writer, this case has never been about true criminal prosecution. Instead, it is a blatant attempt at election interference, designed to embarrass Trump and hinder his political aspirations. The judge’s corrupt ruling and the prosecution’s sensationalism have turned this trial into a “nothing burger” that has eroded public trust in the justice system.
The jury’s deliberations continue, but the odds of a hung jury seem increasingly likely. This outcome would represent a victory for the constitutional principle that justice should prevail, regardless of political affiliations. However, the damage to our constitutional republic has been done, and it remains to be seen whether confidence in the judiciary can be restored.
