Kevin McCarthy The Former Speaker of the House
In a historic move, the House of Representatives made a significant decision yesterday, marking the first instance in American history that a Speaker of the House was ousted. The vote, orchestrated by Florida Representative Matt Gaetz, was a ‘motion to vacate’ Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

The final vote count was 216 in favor of removal and 210 against, with a noteworthy break from party lines as 8 Republicans joined all 208 Democrats in supporting McCarthy’s removal.

Gaetz’s motivation for triggering the vote was clear: a perceived betrayal of promises made by McCarthy earlier in the year. Gaetz expressed his grievances in an interview with Newsmax, stating, “Kevin McCarthy broke so many of the promises he made in January… I remember when he said he was going to use the power of the subpoena and the power of the purse.”

The disappointment stemmed from McCarthy’s failure to initiate robust investigations into alleged corruption within the Biden family and the purported weaponization of government. Gaetz emphasized, “He didn’t even send a subpoena to Hunter Biden.”
On the fiscal front, conservatives were left unsatisfied with McCarthy’s actions. They had anticipated measures to control spending, demand action on border security, and reevaluate funding for Ukraine. However, McCarthy’s collaboration with Democrats to raise the debt ceiling in June and his support for a substantial short-term spending bill last week left conservatives disillusioned. It was this last move that proved to be the final straw.
What lies ahead for the House is the selection of a new Speaker. Several names have been circulating, with figures like Steve Scalise and Byron Donalds in the mix. Nevertheless, this fight for leadership will not unfold immediately, as Representative Patrick McHenry, serving as the temporary Speaker Pro Tem until a replacement is chosen, has adjourned the House until the following week.
In retrospect, the concerns raised about McCarthy’s speakership have now materialized into a tangible rebuke. For those who had reservations about his leadership, this moment has proven consequential. Notably, the debt ceiling deal McCarthy negotiated in June is currently contributing an astonishing $32 billion daily to the national debt, putting the nation on track to accumulate an additional $1 trillion in debt for this month alone.
