Major Overhaul at Fox News as Rupert Murdoch stepping down
After seven decades of overseeing the Fox Corp empire, founder and chairman Rupert Murdoch, now 92 years old, has decided to step down. His son, Lachlan, will be taking the reins.
Taking a Broader View: When we talk about the Fox News empire, we’re referring to a conglomerate that includes Fox News, Fox Business, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Post, The Times of England, Harper Collins (a prominent book publisher), and many other assets.
Unpacking the Details: Rupert will officially relinquish his role in November. In a letter addressed to his colleagues, he stated, “The time is right for me to assume different roles, knowing that we have truly talented teams and a passionate, principled leader in Lachlan.”
Let’s Talk About Rupert: The Australian-born tycoon made his mark in Australian and British news media before making a significant move to the United States. In 1996, he launched Fox News, with Roger Ailes at the helm, and the rest is history. Presently, the Murdoch empire boasts a staggering worth of $11 billion.
Diving into Lachlan: Born in London in 1971, Lachlan relocated to the U.S. with his family at the age of three. By the time he was 34, he had become one of the top executives at his father’s company. However, he departed in 2005 due to disagreements with the then-CEO, Roger Ailes. Lachlan made a triumphant return in 2019, two years after Ailes’ passing, and assumed the roles of chairman and CEO.
Lachlan’s Political Leanings: While some mainstream media headlines paint Lachlan as more conservative than his father, insiders like former Fox News host Eric Bolling contend that Lachlan “is very liberal. His wife is very liberal… I think you’re going to see a more anti-Trump voice emerge at Fox News.”
The Real Upheaval Looms: The true shake-up will come when Rupert Murdoch eventually passes away. At that juncture, the company will be equally divided among his four eldest children. Notably, the three children not named Lachlan are known for their outspoken liberal views.
