Mark Zuckerberg’s Stealth Moves as the META Suite begins Suppressing Political Voices Ahead of 2024 Election
In a strategic play to influence the narrative surrounding the 2024 election, Mark Zuckerberg’s election interference campaign is quietly unfolding on his social media platforms, Instagram and Threads.
The recent move involves the implementation of new tools aimed at limiting the visibility of political content for users. Instagram, in a press release on Friday, announced, “We won’t proactively recommend content about politics on recommendation surfaces across Instagram and Threads.” These ‘recommendation surfaces’ include areas such as Explore, Reels, In-Feed Recommendations, and Suggested Users – essentially, spaces where content from accounts not followed by users is suggested.
The platform asserts that this update will not impact content from accounts users already follow. However, for content creators, particularly those relying on recommendation surfaces to broaden their audience, this move is perceived as a hindrance. Breaking political news, reminiscent of the Hunter Biden laptop scandal in 2020, may find it more challenging to reach new audiences as the 2024 election cycle looms.
To mitigate potential backlash, Instagram claims it will offer users the option to opt-in for recommended political content. The caveat, however, lies in the likelihood that very few users will be aware of this choice.
For those in the know, opting in involves navigating through the settings. Go to ‘Settings and privacy,’ proceed to ‘Content preferences,’ select ‘Political content,’ and choose ‘Don’t limit.’
Mark Zuckerberg’s involvement in election dynamics is no stranger to controversy. Having spent hundreds of millions during the 2020 election, primarily targeting Democrat-leaning areas, the tech billionaire’s foray into election interference remains a cause for concern. As we navigate the complex landscape leading up to the 2024 election, these subtle yet impactful maneuvers by Zuckerberg demand a closer look, raising questions about the influence of tech giants in shaping political discourse.
