Meta Unveils Disinformation Campaigns Originating from China and Russia
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has recently disclosed instances of disinformation efforts originating from China and Russia. The targets of these efforts included prominent entities such as The Washington Post, NATO, and Fox News.
China’s Deceptive Campaign: China’s operation involved its law enforcement agencies, which created counterfeit versions of legitimate American news websites. These fake sites were used to disseminate messages supportive of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) while also launching attacks against critics.
Ben Nimmo, Meta’s Global Threat Intelligence Lead, commented on the extensive nature of the operation, noting that it spanned over 50 platforms including Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and TikTok.
An Interesting Oversight by China: Notably, the bogus websites contained articles with mixed English and Chinese headlines, indicating a lack of thorough proofreading.
Russia’s Smaller-Scale Effort: Russia conducted its own campaign, referred to as ‘Doppelganger’, which involved the replication of websites such as The Washington Post and Fox News. As part of this operation, a fabricated article depicted Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy confessing to being a CIA puppet.
In response, Meta took action by banning 7,704 Facebook accounts and several pages and groups associated with these disinformation campaigns.
