RALEIGH, NC — North Carolina is taking legal action against the Trump administration for canceling nearly $225 million in federal disaster preparedness grants. This has sparked a debate among liberty-minded Americans: Are we witnessing necessary federal cuts or political overreach that undermines local resilience?
Attorney General Jeff Jackson, along with 19 other Democrat-led states, filed a lawsuit after the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) terminated the Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities program, also known as BRIC. Ironically, this same program was expanded under President Trump’s first term with bipartisan support in Congress.
“This money helps us better prepare for future storms.”
Jackson stated.
“FEMA was wrong to cancel it. I’m taking it to court to win these funds back for our state.”
What Is the BRIC Program?
The BRIC program was created to help states fortify infrastructure before disaster strikes. It has awarded nearly $4.5 billion nationwide since 2020. In North Carolina alone, 72 projects were approved between 2020 and 2023, totaling approximately $225 million.
The canceled grants included:
* $7 million for Hillsborough to upgrade flood protection
* $22.5 million for Salisbury to relocate water pump stations
These were not pet projects. They were community-level defenses against real disasters.
So Why the Sudden Reversal?
FEMA’s leadership under the current Trump administration declared in April that the program was “wasteful and ineffective.” A statement criticized BRIC for being focused more on climate change than on disaster response. Some insiders claim the administration is even considering eliminating FEMA.
As constitutionalists, we should always scrutinize federal agencies and demand accountability. FEMA, like many bloated bureaucracies, has failed in the past. But the answer is not to pull the plug on preparedness without offering a workable replacement.
Bipartisan Alarm Bells
Interestingly, this issue has united both sides of the aisle. A bipartisan letter led by Rep. Chuck Edwards and Sen. Thom Tillis, both Republicans from North Carolina, urged FEMA to reconsider. They acknowledged the need for reform but warned:
“Forgoing these critical investments will only make it harder and more expensive for communities to recover from the next storm.”
Even Governor Josh Stein, a Democrat, emphasized that building resilient infrastructure is about saving lives and taxpayer money, not pushing a political agenda.
A Trump Supporter’s Dilemma
Let’s be honest. Many of us supported President Trump because he promised to drain the swamp and prioritize America First. And he did. The original BRIC program was one of those smart initiatives that gave local communities the tools to fight back against disaster without waiting for top-down solutions. Canceling it now, without replacing it with something better, leaves towns vulnerable and local governments scrambling.
This is not about “going soft.” It’s about constitutional accountability. States should not become dependent on Washington, but when the federal government commits funds and local governments make plans based on them, pulling the rug midstream creates chaos.
The Real Fight
The battle is not between red and blue. It is between centralized federal control and community-based preparedness. We must continue to demand that all administrations, left or right, respect the commitments made to the people, and more importantly, that we prioritize local resilience over political optics.
📍 BOTTOM LINE:
Canceling disaster funds under the banner of cutting waste may sound good on the surface. But real leadership means making strategic reforms, not abrupt cuts that punish local communities. Trump supporters can still demand accountability without blindly cheering every decision. That is the true spirit of constitutional liberty.
