Proud Boys Leader Enrique Tarrio Faces Lengthy Sentence Despite Absence from J6 Rally
In a startling turn of events, former Proud Boys chairman Enrique Tarrio has been slapped with a hefty 22-year prison sentence in connection with the January 6th Capitol incident, even though he wasn’t physically present during the event.
Setting a dubious record: Tarrio’s sentencing stands as the lengthiest among all January 6th defendants, and it’s worth noting that prosecutors initially aimed for an even more extreme 33-year sentence.
The curious case: The Biden administration’s Department of Justice leaned heavily on Tarrio’s private group text messages to level the rarely used charge of “seditious conspiracy” against him, a statute enacted after the Civil War to target those who continued hostilities in the South.
However, it’s essential to note that none of the text messages provided explicit evidence of a plan to storm the Capitol, as reported by the New York Times.
Absent from D.C.: Tarrio’s absence from Washington, D.C., on January 6th is undeniable, as he had been detained a day prior for an unrelated incident involving the burning of a Black Lives Matter banner.
The perplexing charge: Prosecutors argued that, despite his physical absence, Tarrio still held command over Proud Boys members and offered support to the group through private messages.
The bigger picture: The fallout from January 6th has seen over 1,100 charges filed and more than 300 individuals facing potential jail time in connection with the events of that day.
Reportedly, Tarrio stated during the trial: “When I get back home, I want nothing to do with politics, groups, activism, or rallies.”
