RACE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE OCEAN

The United States is racing to recover its most advanced $100 million dollar stealth F-35 fighter jet from the bottom of the ocean before China can get to it.

Back up: Earlier this week an F-35 pilot had to eject as his plane crash-landed on the deck of the USS Carl Vinson in the South China Sea. The plane skidded off the carrier and into the sea. Seven were injured but none were life-threatening.

Now the race is on: This plane is packed with cutting-edge technology that China would love to get its hands-on, so it’s imperative that we recover it before they do.

A Navy spokesman said: “The US Navy is making recovery operations arrangements for the F-35C aircraft.”
The recovery effort could take weeks, and would likely involve the U.S. searching the seafloor with survey vessels before using remotely operated vehicles to attach cables to the aircraft in order for cranes to lift it out of the water.
