Republicans Call for Joe Biden’s Removal from State Ballots After Colorado Court Ruling on Trump
In a dramatic turn of events, Republicans are intensifying their efforts to remove President Joe Biden from state presidential ballots, mirroring a recent Colorado Supreme Court decision barring Donald Trump from the 2024 ballot. The 4-3 ruling by the Colorado Supreme Court asserted that the former president violated the 14th Amendment by engaging in insurrection, sparking a wave of GOP voices demanding a similar fate for Biden.
The lower court ruling in Colorado, reached in November, concluded that Trump’s involvement in the U.S. Capitol riot on January 6, 2021, amounted to insurrection. Norma Anderson, a former Republican majority leader of the Colorado House and Senate, was among the Colorado voters pushing for this decision. The riot saw Trump supporters storm the Capitol in protest of his election loss, a charge that Trump vehemently denies, contending that the courts lack authority to exclude candidates based on the constitutional provision.
Echoing this sentiment, some Republicans are now targeting Biden for removal from state ballots, although the constitutional grounds for such actions remain ambiguous. Newsweek has reached out to the Republican Party for a response.
Anthony Sabatini, a Republican congressional candidate in Florida’s 11th district, urged on social media, “Remove Biden from the Florida ballot now!” Meanwhile, Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, speaking to Fox News, suggested removing Biden from Texas’ 2024 ballot due to the administration’s handling of immigration at the U.S.-Mexico border.
The recent developments in Colorado have spurred a chorus of voices within the Republican camp calling for Biden’s exclusion. Gunther Eagleman, a political commentator, insisted on social media that Biden should be removed from the Texas ballot following the Colorado ruling. Conservative commentator Peachy Keenan took a more aggressive stance, stating on social media, “All red states should immediately petition their courts to remove Biden from the ballot.”
The Colorado Supreme Court’s ruling emphasized Trump’s disqualification under Section Three of the 14th Amendment, asserting that he not only incited the insurrection but actively supported it even as the Capitol siege unfolded. The court highlighted Trump’s repeated demands for Vice President Pence to shirk his constitutional duties and his efforts to sway Senators to halt the electoral vote count, characterizing these actions as overt, voluntary, and direct participation in the insurrection.
