Russian Civil War in a Day

Thousands of Russian mercenaries marched toward Moscow in an attempted coup against Vladimir Putin and in less than 24 hours later, the coup was over…

The Wagner group is a private Russian military company with tens of thousands of mercenary soldiers. It’s led by a man named Yevgeny Prigozhin, who up until recently, has been a close ally of Putin.

Wagner has been on the front lines of Ukraine since the war began in early 2022.

In recent months, Warner has clashed with Russian military leadership over strategy, loss of lives, and lack of supplies.

The timeline: Late Friday Jan 23rd [U.S. time] Prigozhin claimed Russian military leaders conducted an airstrike on his men and called on his mercenaries to “march for justice.”

From there, here’s how the events unfolded over that weekend:

The Russian government responded, calling for Prigozhin’s arrest, accusing him of mutiny.

Prigozhin responded by seizing control of cities in southern Russia and marching his troops toward Moscow.

Next, Putin released a video statement promising to quash the “armed insurrection” – calling it “treason” and a “stab in the back.”

By Saturday Jan 24th afternoon, just 125 miles from Moscow, Progozhin told his mercenaries to stand down and return to their base on the front lines of the Ukraine war.

What changed? It’s not entirely clear. But reports are that a deal was reached where Putin would drop the mutiny charges against Prigozhin, but he would be exiled to Belarus.

Strategists have suggested that Wagner did not have the men or firepower to take Moscow and would have been wiped from the air had they gotten close to the Russian capital. So it seems that the futile reality may have caught up with Prigozhin.

Theories: The spontaneous nature of the revolt followed by the oddly quick turnaround has sparked theories over what the real motive was.

Some suggested it was a coordinated event by Putin and Prigozhin to expose dissenters in Russia.

Others say it was coordinated in order to mask troop movements.

Some believe the revolt was antagonized by the CIA.

As with most things in Russia, things aren’t always as they seem. So let’s classify this story as “ongoing” and assume that the facts as we know them today could be very different a week from now.
