The left politicizes tragedy
A gunman opened fire outside a Texas mall, leaving at least eight people dead and several others wounded. The left first reaction was to blame “white supremacy” despite the shooter being Hispanic.
The shooting was carried out by 33-year-old Mauricio Garcia, on a Saturday afternoon outside an outlet mall in Allen, Texas [which was designated as a ‘gun-free zone’].
Garcia fired dozens of rounds using an “AR-style” rifle. Seven died on the scene and one died later at the hospital. Garcia was killed by an off-duty police officer.
Who is Mauricio Garcia: Details are still limited, but we do know he worked as a security guard and he lived at his parents’ home. Police searched the home following the shooting.
Hispanic white supremacist? Following the attack, left-wing media outlets and pundits quickly tried to politicize the incident.
Washington Post ran the headline: “Investigators examine Texas gunman’s white-supremacist views”
The report cites an anonymous law enforcement official who says Garcia’s social media “appeared to show an interest in white supremacy.”
Reality check: We know the mental gymnastics the left will take to link anything it doesn’t like to “white supremacy.” For an example, just look at today’s ‘Hot Take of the Day’ at the bottom of this newsletter – a tweet from Elon Musk. AOC called it “crude racism.”
All of this distracts from the tragic loss of life – people enjoying a Saturday afternoon at the mall gunned down for no reason at all.
Gov. Greg Abbott told Fox News:
“We’ve seen an increased number of shootings in states with easy gun laws as well as states with very strict gun laws… there has been a dramatic increase in the amount of anger and violence that’s taking place in America. And what Texas is doing in a big-time way, we are working to address that anger and violence by going to its root cause which is addressing the mental health problems behind it.”
