TikTok announced it will begin censoring “election misinformation” and tagging content on “election-related” pages ahead of the 2022 midterms elections.
The details: TikTok released a statement detailing its plans for the midterms.
“When we become aware of content that violates our Community Guidelines, including disinformation or misinformation that causes harm to individuals, our community or the larger public, we remove it in order to foster a safe and authentic app environment.”
“Some examples of what we would remove include: false claims that seek to erode trust in public institutions, such as claims of voter fraud resulting from voting by mail or claims that your vote won’t count; content that misrepresents the date of an election; attempts to intimidate voters or suppress voting; and more.”
Related: TikTok’s parent company is the Chinese media firm ByteDance. A recent investigation conducted by Forbes Magazine found that 300 employees at ByteDance previously worked at Chinese Communist Party state media outlets, according to their LinkedIn employment history.
Big picture: TikTok’s election plan echoes other social media platforms like Facebook [which also controls Instagram and WhatsApp], which recently updated their policies for the 2022 elections in order to “fight foreign interference and domestic influence campaigns” by using their “network of independent fact-checking partners.”
Those “independent fact-checking partners” are the same ones that censored people (myself included) for speaking the truth about covid.
