Trump: ‘I’d Consider Pardon for EVERY J6 Prisoner.’
Former President Donald J. Trump has indicated his willingness to consider pardons for all individuals currently imprisoned or facing prosecution in connection with the events of January 6. In a recent interview, Trump voiced concerns about what he perceives as a “two-tier justice system,” highlighting disparities in the treatment of individuals involved in various acts of civil unrest.
During his interview with TIME Magazine, Trump drew comparisons to other instances of violence, such as the unrest in Portland and Minneapolis, where he noted a lack of significant legal repercussions for those involved. He lamented the apparent inconsistency in the application of justice, describing it as a “very, very sad thing.”
Trump underscored the fact that the only casualty directly linked to the January 6 riots was protester Ashli Babbitt. He referenced the conviction of Black Lives Matter activist John Sullivan, also known as Jayden X, who filmed Babbitt’s death and was subsequently convicted for his role in inciting rioters. Additionally, Trump referenced the ongoing $30 million wrongful death lawsuit filed by Babbitt’s family against Capitol Police Officer Lt. Michael Byrd.
Representative Clay Higgins (R-LA) has raised questions about the involvement of federal law enforcement in instigating the violence on January 6. Higgins suggests that his investigation has uncovered evidence of federal agents interacting with U.S. military veterans in online chat groups prior to the protests.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Supreme Court is deliberating on whether the Department of Justice, under President Biden, has overstepped its authority by leveraging a financial crimes statute to enhance charges against individuals accused of obstructing justice during the Capitol riots.
As the legal proceedings unfold, Trump’s consideration of pardons for January 6 defendants adds a new dimension to the ongoing debate surrounding accountability and justice in the Constitutional Republic.
